The insomnia appears to have resolved. I think. I went to bed late because I ended up watching Critical Role, but I slept soundly for seven hours, and then had a two-hour nap before work without any issues (other than I got really cold, for some reason). So, yay for that! Insomnia sucks.

Today was kind of a not-much-happened day. I got my hair cut (no pictures, sorry) and am quite pleased with the result. I sort of knew my hair had soft curls, but the kind of minimal styling I've always done to it usually let to it hanging straight. No longer! So now my hair curls, which feels super weird. I got used to thinking of myself as someone with straight hair. I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't have the kind of curly hair that people with actual curls complain about, with frizzing and hairbrush issues. Still, it's definitely not straight. Which, I suppose, is fitting, since I'm not straight either. ;)

That aside, I went home and played a video game that I am basically terrible at, called 7 Days to Die.
In which Phnee goes on at length about gaming and zombies )

After the video game came a nap, and then work, which has been very work-like the whole evening and into the night. It finally started winding down about an hour and a half ago, when I was able to head out to grab something to eat (the nap resulted in a poorly-planned meal, alas, but I think I needed the sleep more).

So there you have my wild adventures of the day.

So the metro got closed for emergency reasons today, forcing me to walk much of the way to work.

My first thought? ZOMBIES!

Good thing I'm writing the sequel to the zombie novel this year, eh?

I enjoy music, long walks on the beach, knitting, and shooting zombies )

In other words, [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave sent along some photos of me from this weekend.

My colleague Excitable!Puppy lent me Resident Evil 4, and I decided to put it into the PS2 tonight when I got home from work.

After chasing after my AV cable, and then puzzling through the friendly manual, I decided to have a go at it. After all, I figured, I might get used to the game play just by bopping around.

HAH!

The game starts off with the main character, Leon Kennedy, being dropped off right outside an old abandoned shack in the middle of the woods in a remote location. My immediate thought? OMGZOMBIESI'MGONNADIEAAAAAAH!

Yeah.

So I manage to get him to the door, and I'm still having difficulty with the controls (they're not the same as the other two games I've played on the PS2), and oh God I just know there's a zombie RIGHTBEHINDTHEDOOR and I haven't even started the game and my heart is currently residing in my mouth. Okay. No zombies. There's a live person who instead attacks me with an axe. I likely use too many bullets dispatching him, and realize that I can't aim for sh*t (how am I supposed to go for the head if I can't aim? The zombies are GONNA EAT ME!).

Then I get "instructions" from my "contact" to go into the rest of the totally abandoned village.

Uh, yeah. Screw that noise. I'm not doing this at midnight. Nuh-uh. My zombie street cred is ruined forever, but I'm willing to live with the shame, just so long as I don't end up freaking myself out for the rest of my ever-lovin' life.

Yes, I'm a wuss.

I just had to filter out [livejournal.com profile] zombie_survival, which has suffered from a massive influx of n00bs due to LJ putting the community in the spotlight. I toughed it out a few days, but they're posting like 15 times a day now, all with the same lame ideas (Lookit all my guns! Lookit all my kewl but ultimately useless bladed weapons! I'm going to head to WalMart 'cause that's what they do in the movies! Lookit my zombie costume!) and riddled with spelling mistakes.

So, out of the default view it goes. I'll check back in a month or so.

I had a very vivid dream the other night (these have become increasingly rare for me, which is sad) that actually involved zombies. I was living in a remote-ish area in a small town not too far from the sea, and had already been doing my preparedness thing for quite some time. I don't know how I knew that there were zombies coming (I couldn't see any), but I remember being quite anxious and starting to board up windows and generally getting ready for the onslaught.

The nifty part of my dream was that I got to be an omniscient observer. This happens a lot in my dreams: I get flashes of "Meanwhile, in a totally different location..." a lot like in a movie. So I the dreamer (not the actor in my dream) knew that there was indeed a real zombie infestation starting in the town. They were coming up out of the ocean, only one or two to begin with, all covered in seaweed and slime, their flesh grey and rotting.

Back at "my" house, my parents had unexpectedly shown up, having been convinced that I was not a loony and that my concerns about zombies were more than legitimate. They pitched in to help me barricade the place, and I was just beginning to feel as though we might get through the initial infestation unscathed, when my mother left the house to go rescue a neighbour she recognized (I'm a little fuzzy on this part of the dream), leaving one of the doors to the house wide open behind her. Before I knew it, the zombies were upon us, and I remember having a moment of clarity, of knowing that there really was no point in trying to hold off the undead hordes, because there would always be that *one* mistake that would undo months and years of work. I remember also realizing that maybe being one of the undead wouldn't be so bad.

That's when the dream took a turn for the surreal (yeah, yeah, moreso than zombies). I once again became an omniscient observer, and returned to the seashore, where I could see Jesus Christ summoning the zombies from the salt water. He waded into the water, and submerged for a few moments, only to re-emerge borne upon a veritable tidal wave of ambulatory corpses (all of them swimming, oddly enough, rather than walking). It's interesting to note that the zombies in my dreams were at least partially sentient and able to talk enough to communicate that they were not unhappy with what had happened, and viewed it as a kind of salvation (tying in with the image of Christ held aloft by zombies, I guess).

As I said, the dream was particularly vivid, and I was quite unsettled by it for the first few hours of the day after awakening. Nice to know that my brain is still being consumed by zombies, two years after the writing of my NaNo novel.

Makes a man healthy, wealthy, and dead.

Been getting up early the past two days. As in, before 07:00. No idea what's wrong with me, except that the weather is not conducive to sleep.

I got a ton of stuff done yesterday morning, which was all errands. Zipped around town all morning by BMW (Bus Metro Walk), came home intending to do some cleaning, and passed out between 14:00 and 19:00 for the world's longest nap. So much for cleaning and cooking.

So cleaning and cooking will happen today, right after I get home from Meeting. At least I won't be all tired and frazzled from running errands all morning, which should make things easier. I've already cleaned out the litter boxes (*pats self on back*), so that's at least one thing I won't have waiting for me.

I appear to have finished Dragon Quest VIII, too, although I keep hearing that there's an end quest that unlocks at the end of the game, which has not in fact unlocked for me. I don't know that I'm going to go back and poke at it, though. By the end the game just didn't have my attention anymore, although I was pleased to note that it had a happy ending. :)

I think my next PS2 acquisition will be one of the Resident Evil games. I am in a zombie frame of mind these days.

I just have to make sure that I don't succumb to another nap on my return home this afternoon.

Testing...

I think that, maybe, the computer may have resurrected. So far so good, anyway.

*knocks on wood*

Updates as events warrant.

The zombie icon seems appropriate for this occasion.

From what I can tell, it's pretty accurate for a random-selection type of meme.

I now have a zombie icon. I figured it was about time. Also, it reflects my current state of being. I was planning on making an early night of it, but the Paternal Unit had other ideas, and so I've only been home for about 15 minutes. Going to go pass out now. No writing today. Writing tomorrow. Yes.

G'night.

Okay, a more lighthearted entry now.

I need input from all of you about zombies. Take a minute to think about this, please, even if you're not hugely into zombies, or even if you think the whole thing is a silly waste of time. If the latter, I'd be interested to know why the whole thing doesn't interest you. Obviously, there is no need to answer *all* of the questions. These are just things I'd like to know in general, so if you're so inclined, I'd appreciate answers to as many of the questions as possible. :)

1- So what does "zombie" mean to you?

2- What exactly is a zombie, accoriding to your definition?

3- What causes someone to become a zombie?

4- How did you learn about zombies?

5- Recommend some good zombie movies to me. Tell me why you're recommending them.

6- Recommend some *bad* zombie movies. Tell me why you think they're bad.

7- Tell me your favourite stereotype from zombie flicks. Why do you like it? Why does it work?

8- What's your favourite "stock character" in zombie movies? Why?

9- What stereotype would you most like to see turned on its head? Why?

10- What's your favourite setting for a zombie story?

11- What's the most common "mistake" committed by characters in a zombie story?

12- What sort of "mistake" do you think a modern, zombie-savvy character might make?

13- What do you feel zombie stories have neglected or underdeveloped in terms of plot or characters elements?

14 - Recommend some good zombie-related books. Fiction and "documentary."

15- Recommend some good internet sites about zombies.

Thank you!
