From a technique point of view, you should lean forwards, get your support arm under the rifle and your right elbow higher, and do a hasty sling-up like what I'm doing with the SKS in this pic. To the extent possible, of course; M-14s weren't really designed for smaller-statured shooters. If you were to get one, you might want to get its stock shortened.
We can work on this next time you're out, if you like.
I doubt if I'll get a SKS, I didn't really enjoy shooting it all that much (enjoyed the bayonet charge, mind you). I'll probably stick with smaller-caliber rifles and shotguns, inasmuch as I'll ever consort with non-restricted firearms.
I could *really* get into the handgun thing, though...
Hmmm... handguns. Lots of potential fun there. If you like, I can try to arrange an evening at the Vankleek Hill club with my buddy Enrico, who has more Smith&Wessons than I have guns. And that's just the Smiths :). There are a lot of options out there on the handgun market, and it'd be good to try as many as you can before buying.
The SKS is a cheap ugly military arm designed for use by illiterate Communist peasants. I kinda like it, but I'm a Sovietophiliac recoil slut.
Yup, Enrico is the LMI from work. Good guy; we have virtually identical MPOs, and it turns out that he used to knit, too. Big quiet gentle Italian guy with a beard. You'd probably like him.
Selecting firearms is kind of like selecting golf clubs; there are all sorts of different niches. Depends on what you want them for, what feels right in your hands, and then there are all sorts of other considerations. I seem to have emphasized cheap, powerful, reliable, and high-capacity; good zombie guns, in other words :). Given that you're thinking of eventually homesteading, you might want to have a look at Rawles' thoughts on firearms selection...
Definitely a lot of collie; I'd say 50%. Chibi mentioned that, along with husky and GSD. I can see the GSD plainly and should have thought of that myself. Husky? Hmm...maybe in the curl of the tail and the pinch of extra length in the coat? :)

Date: 2009-07-29 12:25 am (UTC)Don't get me wrong: I love the *idea* of the SKS. I just didn't enjoy the feel of shooting it.
I would *love* a chance to get my hands on a S&W, to see what it's like. Is this your LMI from work?
Gah. Must remember to go get my photo taken for the RPAL application...

Bayonets over Guns
Date: 2009-07-29 10:10 am (UTC)So, you signed the Compact?
Re: Bayonets over Guns
Date: 2009-07-29 11:14 am (UTC)Although I'd probably draw the line at laran weaponry just on principle.

Date: 2009-07-29 04:59 pm (UTC)Ha! Boy, don't I wish I had me some of that.
Of course, I wouldn't want anyone else to have some.
Dick Cheney with laran doesn't bear thinking about.

Thanks for posting!

Waaaaahhhh!!!!
