Got myself a new filing cabinet last night. Good times. Well, I got it in the afternoon at Bureau en Gros, where the nice man put it in my car for me.

Getting it home proved more problematic. For one thing, the man wedged it into the trunk of my car, which is quite deep but not very wide. Yeah. So I spent about ten minutes or so (in the rain) yanking futilely at the thing, which was at a very awkward angle indeed. Needless to say, none of the passers-by who paused to gawk at me offered to help. I managed, by twisting and pulling, to get it out of the car and onto the street.

Of course, because it was late at night, raining, and I had something heavy to negotiate, there was no parking on the side of the street closest to my apartment. So I wrestled the thing across the street, mostly by pivoting it on itself, since I couldn't lift it for very long.

The stairs posed a new problem. I eventually solved this difficulty by flipping the box end over end up the stairs, which, if you can credit it, turned out to be easier than moving it across the street.

Still, I now have a filing cabinet in my living room. Later today I shall unwrap it and put my papers in it. Exciting, no?

I haven't been updating this thing properly lately. In fact, I haven't been doing much at all that involves the computer at home. Mostly, I've been too tired to do anything in the evening before going to bed other than read through the day's LJ entries, post something short and pithy about cleaning, and then collapse in a tired heap. I've been writing at work, so the August Writing challenge continues apace, even if I'm not posting the results every day.

Everything else has pretty much gone by the wayside.

cut for length )

So this is what's been going on in Phnee's world of late. As you can see, dear readers, you're not missing all that much. Mostly it's cleaning and cooking and cats, a little bit of writing, and a lot of seeing friends and generally being all sociable-like. Nothing earth-shattering, just domestic tranquility.

I have been reading LJ, as mentioned, but just haven't had the energy to comment on most entries. My apologies for that. Once I get used to the new schedule I've imposed on myself, I shall doubtless start commenting more.

Four-day weeks are great, except that they seriously mess up my sense of timing. I spent today filing and wrestling with The One Form, which is by itself incentive enough to look for another line of work. I'd bitch and moan about that now, but I have to run. Volunteering at my dance club in half an hour. Places to go, people to see, music to dance to.

Italy won, if the noise outside is to be believed. I never realised how many fans lived in my neighbourhood. I'm vaguely frightened.

In case you'd forgotten but are interested, I'm still posting my serials up at [livejournal.com profile] secret_history. Beyond the Pale just updated, and Conflation will go up on Thursday (it's following a bi-monthly schedule instead of a weekly one like BTP).

Gotta run. More later, maybe.

Today has been absolutely crazy at work. Emergencies and rushes and signings and important meetings and more phone calls than you can shake a stick at.

I've still managed to get a fair bit of filing done, in spite of all that. I'm very impressed with myself. I'm determined to get all my filing completely finished by the end of June. Well, by "completely finished" I mean "all caught up," really. There's no such thing as completely finishing with the filing. There are days (today included) when I feel a whole lot like Sisyphus: just when I get rid of one pile, someone else comes along and dumps another pile on my desk.

Still, if I've caught up with my filing by the end of June, it'll be one more reason to try to obtain a week or two off in July. I won't have to worry about old filing while I'm gone: only the new filing will pile up. I might not be able to get two weeks, but even a week would help. A week of nothing but domestic puttering, cooking and baking and taking walks and other nice, relaxing activities.

Also, the idea of being caught up on my filing appeals to me because it makes me feel as though I'd be able to leave the office on fairly short notice without feeling guilty that I'm leaving behind all this unfinished work. I'd like to be able to leave my successor with a clean desk, nothing pending, nothing in the inbox: tabula rasa, so to speak. Not that I have any kind of job lined up yet, but the idea that I'd be able to pick up and leave without any qualms is very appealing and reduces my stress levels like you wouldn't believe.

My job isn't all that stressful, to be honest. There are two things that stress me: one is the filing piling up while I deal with emergencies. I simply don't like having that much paper accumulate on my desk –it makes me feel incompetent and unproductive (regardless of whether or not that assessment is true). The other is New!Boss. I know he doesn't mean to stress me, but dear God is he a stressful little man to work for. It would help if I didn't always feel like some sort of bug about to be eaten by a hungry lizard every time he looks at me. I turn into a blithering idiot around him, because he's always staring. very. intently. at me, and I can't think straight because I don't know where to look that doesn't involve the Giant Staring Brown Eyes Of Doom. We just don't speak the same language: if I speak he doesn't get what I'm saying, and vice versa.

I'm hoping this will resolve itself as we each settle into the new routine. He's a nice enough guy, I just have trouble communicating with him. Time will tell.

The One Form has also made its monthly appearance on my desk. I am unthrilled, but I shall soldier on regardless. This month I get the added complication that some of the expenses are being paid by another department, but there's no procedure in place for them to do so. I anticipate many phone calls and a fair amount of aggravation. Whee.

So that's my exciting news from work. Thus far nothing new has happened at home either. The Parental Units are coming home tomorrow, so that should be fun. They're always in a splendid mood after their trips, so I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

Survived my first day at work without internet. No one died, let there be rejoicing.

My productivity went up a bit, predictably. Of course, there isn't all that much for me to do at work, so once I've caught up on all my filing I predict that I'll be sitting on my thumbs a good portion of the time, the way I was before I got internet access at work sometime in the spring of 2005, if memory serves.

Anyway, I have produced two instalments of Beyond the Pale in two days. Yesterday was the regular posting schedule (every Tuesday), and today is February 1st, which means that I have officially started my personal February Writing Challenge. Let's see if I make it this time. I didn't make it in August, but August prepared me for NaNoWriMo, and I did that, so maybe this'll work. Maybe there's nowhere to go but up from now on.

Oh, it's hard to hold the hand of anyone

Who is reaching for the sky just to surrender...

Okay, random musical interlude aside...

I am in a very random mood tonight.

I should either go to bed or work on my serial. I have discovered that I can write about 1,000 words over my lunch break at work. Since each instalment of Beyond the Pale is between 1,500 and 2,500 words, this means that, in theory, in the evenings I should be producing anywhere between 500 and 1,500 words. To be honest, that hasn't happened yet.

My best days during NaNoWriMo, I managed, I think, 6,000 words in one day. However, if you can credit it, I'm actually busier this February than I was in November. Be afraid, be very afraid. For one, my club is having a three-day event next week. I'm also going to be taking courses over the course of two weekends. All-day affairs, don't you know. Insert other regularly-scheduled stuff in between, and you get a very busy Phnee.

Well, I shall make do. What is it they say? If you need something done, give it to the busiest person you know. It's true, though: the more you do, the more you seem to be able to get done. (If only I could convince myself that housework should fit into all this :P) So maybe I'll manage it after all, in spite of my misgivings.

Incidentally, you all have permission to pester me about whether I'm writing, and to kick my ass if I'm not. What are friends for, right?

Really boring rambling about work )

Well, that's all for now folks. I am heading to bed. More exciting news from the filing front tomorrow. Wish me luck with my serial, I shall keep you all informed concerning the posting schedule, whether you want to hear it or not. ;)

Cheers!
