t! wanted to know what sort of experiences I seek out when I travel to other countries. Remember, folks, if you have a topic you'd like to give me, there are still slots left open at my tell me what to talk about post for this month! The 16th and the 17th are a blank slate, as are the 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th of June. That's only 6 more topics! Get 'em while they're hot! Or, in this case, maybe a little tepid.

Onward!

I'm leaving on a jet plane! )

So [livejournal.com profile] sorcerer asked me to talk about my adventures in fandom. How it came to be, and all that.

It's not that interesting a story, alas. Up until 2009, fandom had always been this thing I knew about but never participated in. I knew it was out there, and I had lots of friends in various fandoms. I heard all the horror stories of ship wars and flame wars and plagiarism and scandal, and discreetly patted myself on the back for never getting involved in that sort of craziness.

Fandom was cray, y'all.

The story of my descent into fandom )

Conclusion? The SPN fandom is cray, y'all. But it's been a wild ride.

The best part of being in the fandom? It let me reconnect with [livejournal.com profile] pdaughter, with whom I then had a standing date every week to watch SPN at her place. We started hanging out on non-SPN days too, then combining grocery shopping and other regular activities, and soon I found there were very few people with whom I wanted to spend time rather than her. And the rest, as they say, is history. <3

'Cause I'm at work and bored.

Fanfiction. Discuss. Every angle welcome.

As usual, no flaming, no ad hominem arguments, etc. Basic courtesy applies, and don't be a jackass. Arguing in bad faith is discouraged, but not forbidden.

Aaaaaand... GO!

:::ETA:::

I was asked for clarification. So:

Why write fanfiction at all?

What makes fanfiction a valid form of expression (or not)?

What role do you think fanfiction plays in fandom?

Should an author have a say in what happens to their work once it's released to the public?

I just recognized a pattern of behaviour. Why I didn't notice before is beyond me.

See, I always knew November kind of sucked for me. What I *didn't* see until today is that every November I go into survival hyperdrive, withdraw from humanity, and find something to obsess over. Every year it's something different. 2006 was the zombie novel, 2007 was the new job at the RCMP, and last year I read something like forty-three books (yes, I went back and checked) and spent all my free time (which wasn't much) with BorderCrossing. This year it appears to be watching Supernatural and reading fanfic. Yes, fanfic.

There's been a new thing every year. I was wondering why I wasn't "feeling" the same thing as in 2006 when I was writing about zombie, why this novel isn't coming together in my head, and now I understand why: the obsession is different this year.

It's too bad, but at least I get what's going on now.

Night shift is performing its usual magic. This week I have done very little other than work and sleep.

I did post new installments up at Midnight Crossroads, and God help me, I actually wrote some fanfiction for the first time ever, because I was bored and my brain refused to produce anything else. Not that I think fanfiction isn't a valid form of expression, let me hasten to add. It's that my version of fanfiction is... unpublishable. It's not quite Mary-Sue levels of awful, but I suspect it's close. ¬_¬ Oh well. At least I'm writing, right?

I am watching the first X-Files movie. I seem to remember it being better than this.

In more random news, I have pulled something in my neck, which is making existence a wee bit more difficult than usual.

I'm going to order some needles from Knit Picks. With any luck, they'll be here by next week, so that I can get started on my Christmas shawl next weekend.

So, yeah. That's what I've been up to lately. As you can see, excitement abounds. :)

After chatting about L4D with John Scalzi during the kaffeeklatch on Saturday, I mentioned that someone ought to fanfic that line of graffiti. He then looked me in the eye and told me to do it.

So... looks like I have a writing project. Too bad I haven't quite figured out how to do it yet. Normally the answer would be "Play more L4D," only I can't because I don't have the equipment.

*sigh*
