I got home yesterday after fighting off a migraine for most of the day, feeling seriously out of sorts. That was after the Overtime Fairy visited. So Overtime Fairy + Migraine Fairy = Seriously Cranky Phnee.

I took a bubble bath (YAY!), with the intention of doing some tidying afterward, since the cleaning lady is coming today. Yeah. That didn't happen. I felt marginally better but still overall crummy after my bath, so instead I went to bed and set my alarm early.

Now, normally this is where my well-paved road usually goes to hell. I am not good at getting up early, especially when I'm tired. Today, however, appears to have been an exception to the rule. I got up when my alarm rang (okay, I hit "snooze" for 15 minutes, but that was part of the plan), and have been tidying for the past little while. I also made breakfast and had coffee, which NEVER happens when I'm on day shift, because I'm usually not up on time to have breakfast at home (I keep breakfast in my locker at work for just such contingencies).

Now I just have to tidy the front entrance, change the litter in the cat pans, and make my bed. Oh, and get dressed. :P I have exactly fifty-five minutes for this, which means it's all going to get done. w00t!

Tonight is Hump Night at Hurley's. Must remember to bring MacGyver for [livejournal.com profile] sorceror.

I think one of the non-work things I will do today will be to come up with a comprehensive list of names for my co-workers, to which I can refer if I want. Maybe a list of other frequently-used non-LJ names as well. That way I won't have to try to remember who I've already named and so forth.

Okay. The cat pans aren't going to clean themselves. Off I go!

In the interests of keeping up with my oh-so-exciting daily life, my Maternal Unit has started an LJ. Everyone say hi to [livejournal.com profile] mousmes_mim. The Maternal Unit is not exactly LJ-savvy. Don't expect her to friend anyone, or even to comment, since she has already stated unequivocally that she doesn't want to do any of that. She's just in it for me.

Still, it's the top of a slippery slope. I figure it's only a matter of time before she's buying extra icon slots. ;)

I am very, very bored. I am on the stand-alone computer at work, which means I can check my friends pages and suchlike.

I have therefore been fussing with LJ, and have re-vamped my other two LJs to the current S2 style, in particular [livejournal.com profile] secret_history, which is no longer entirely BLACKDOOMEGADS, but a pale hue which is doubtless more restful to the eye.

Sadly, it's Sunday, which means everyone is off doing happy weekend things, and not providing me with entertainment. Bored cat is therefore bored.

My co-worker, Big!Bear, brought a few movies, including No Country For Old Men which was both depressing and narratively unsatisfying. Did I mention that I hate detectives and police officers who seem incapable of doing their jobs? Yeah. In spades.

He also brought There Will Be Blood and 3:10 to Yuma. I've seen the latter and know it's highly enjoyable, but I'm curious about the former. We shall see...

It was last week that my little LJ turned seven years old. Seven! I never managed to keep a diary for more than three days running, until I discovered LJ. Apparently getting feedback is what was preventing me from being consistent. ;)

So happy belated anniversary to me!

Work has blocked my LJ friends page. Weird. I can still post to my own LJ, though. Further weird.

Okay, I'm having weird issues with my LJ Navigation Strip. I have it set to show up everywhere I go, but when I click other people's entries, not only do I lose the Navigation Strip, but in entries that are viewed in the default LJ style (as opposed to the custom style of the journal in question) I don't even get the LJ menu bar anymore.

Anyone know what's up with that?

ZOMG ICONS!

I just randomly discovered that I have 50 new icon slots!

[livejournal.com profile] iconsbycurtana, prepare to be boarded! :D
mousme: Two open books, one lying on top of the other at an angle (Books)
I have been sitting on my hands in order not to buy more books. I am in a fidgety kind of mood lately, in which I want things to be "finished." The painting in my apartment (still not done, but it's looking good for mid-to-end of December), the buying of furniture, the decorating, all of it. Of course I know it's a process, that it won't all get done overnight, blah blah blah. I still want it DONE.

*shrug*

I'm weird, I know.

Anyway, my fidgety "I-want-it-DONE" mood is translating into books. Specifically, books that "complete" a series. I have been reading a lot of series of late, and many of these were lent to me by friend ([livejournal.com profile] owldaughter and [livejournal.com profile] toughlovemuse are the worst offenders in this department, but there have been others). The problem with that is that I then want to have the books on hand, for when I will inevitably re-read them. There are few books I own that I haven't read more than once. So I buy the books when I see them on the shelves, especially when they're second-hand. This presents me with a second problem: bookstores (especially second-hand bookstores) have no consideration AT ALL for my OCD tendencies, and stubbornly refuse to sell the books to me in the order in which I want them. Many times they actually don't even have the books in the store! Shocking, I know.

So last week I went on a bit of a binge, and managed to complete a number of the series in which I had large gaps. I now own all the Kelley Armstrong novels except the most recent one. Katharine Kerr went on the list, as did Lynn Flewelling (known on LJ as [livejournal.com profile] otterdance, Jim Butcher, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Dianne Day, Gregory MacGuire, C.J. Cherryh (I was good and only bought one), and a few others. I was disappointed not to find any of Carole Nelson Douglas' Irene Adler series: they had a few of her Midnight Louie books, but I haven't read any of those yet, and if I do I'd like to start with the first one and work my way through them in order (yes, I know, OCD). They look like they might be fun, though, since Midnight Louie is a crime-solving cat.

Also, because I didn't want to just buy books I had already read or were part of a series I already owned, and because I clearly needed more books to my name (I figure I'm safe so long as I have fewer books than [livejournal.com profile] owldaughter: she's my measuring stick), I bought myself a copy of Kushiel's Dart, which I started on Friday and then didn't have the time to continue until today. I'm enjoying it so far: it's refreshing to have a very obviously French-inspired fantasy setting, as opposed to a Gaelic one (don't get me wrong: when they're good, they're excellent; it's just that everyone and their cousin uses Celtic mythology, it seems), and I'm very much interested by the hints of the court intrigue and adventure that are being hinted at in the early pages of the novel. Overall I've heard good things about the series, and so far I have no reason to think otherwise.

Okay. Back to work.

LJ is meant to be down in the morning, but since I plan to be asleep during that time I hope that the transition will be seamless for me. I hope they can pull it off without losing data, because otherwise that'll be over six years' worth of journalling that will go down the tubes. Not the end of the world, but certainly a sentimental loss for me.

I just had to filter out [livejournal.com profile] zombie_survival, which has suffered from a massive influx of n00bs due to LJ putting the community in the spotlight. I toughed it out a few days, but they're posting like 15 times a day now, all with the same lame ideas (Lookit all my guns! Lookit all my kewl but ultimately useless bladed weapons! I'm going to head to WalMart 'cause that's what they do in the movies! Lookit my zombie costume!) and riddled with spelling mistakes.

So, out of the default view it goes. I'll check back in a month or so.

I am sneaking online at work to say that I am having connectivity issues at home. My modem appears to be snubbing me. I hope the problem will be resolved soon, but if you don't hear from me for a while, that's why.

Cheers!

After reading a number of frustrated posts from others, I have realized that it was my provider and not me, and that the situation has been resolved already. So, yay!
mousme: A text icon in black text on yellow that reads The avalanche has started, it is too late for the pebbles to vote (Avalanche)
Everyone and their cousin has posted about this, and many of them more eloquently than I. I simply state for the record that Strikethrough 2007, as it's been dubbed, is yet another example of several things that have been wrong with LJ for many years:

1- Letting hysterical vigilantes dictate what is and isn't appropriate LiveJournal content. (I refer you back to the Great Breastfeeding Icon Debacle of 2006)

2- Overreacting to the aforementioned hysterical vigilantes' concerns by mass-deleting/banning journals and communities without so much as a case-by-case review process in place.

3- Failing to communicate a) to the people directly affected by the change in policy, and b) to the LiveJournal Community in general.

Doubtless this, too, will blow over, like every single other LiveJournal Drama that has occurred over the past few years. I, for one, don't plan on going anywhere. Still, I find it sad that the LiveJournal and Six Apart staff are consistently caving in to special-interests groups and others who have very specific and destructive agendas. I deplore the lack of basic customer service, which would dictate that they at the very least post an announcement detailing their actions and the reasoning behind them.

Their silence on this topic, and all others like it, speaks volumes.

Not wanting to disappoint [livejournal.com profile] bodhifox, I tried to make a voice post today. They've changed the access number from Canada, however, and now when I call I seem to be getting someone's voicemail. It's odd.

Can anyone in Canada tell me what I'm doing wrong? It's most annoying. Then again, the last time I made a voice post was May 2006, so I guess that's the problem. Infrequent usage.
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Baah!)
[livejournal.com profile] bodhifox asked me about three interests and three icons, so here goes:

Mythmaking: I've always been fascinated by mythology since I was a little girl. I used to read all the myth anthologies on which I could get my greedy little hands. I felt a particular resonance with myths that I didn't get from other stories (although I enjoyed them tremendously too, don't get me wrong). When I got older and began telling my own stories, I began to understand that there was something universal about the Story, that no matter how a story was told, no matter what it was about, it always came back to the same sort of thing, and I found that particularly reassuring. The idea that every story we tell is part of a greater whole is very important to me. Everything we do contributes to a greater Story, every tale we create, every tale we relate, is part of building the great myths of our society.

I don't know if I'm explaining this very clearly. I blame the lack of coffee.

Castles in Spain: This one's easy. From my mother I inherited the capacity for infinite daydreaming about the kind of life I'd like to have, some day in the mythical future (there go those pesky myths again). My mother called this kind of future-daydreaming "Building castles in Spain," which I believe is an accepted metaphor, if not a common one. So one of my favourite pastimes is telling stories to myself about how things will be in a year, in five years, in ten years, in forty years. In my mind there are countless castles that have been built and modified over the years, and each one is special to me.

Line dancing: For recent arrivals in my LJ, you probably don't know that for nearly two years I was an avid line dancer. I joined a club here in town where I volunteered my time and spent at least three evenings a week, sometimes four. I love dancing, and I discovered that I love dancing by going to this club on their open house night, and just giving it a try. My current work schedule doesn't allow me to go, and it breaks my heart.

This icon was made by the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] curtana. It's a text quote from Season 2 of Babylon 5, spoken by Susan Ivanova in the episode "Points of Departure." I use it for days when everything seems to be going wrong, as a tongue-in-cheek thing.

This icon was made by the equally lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] karine, who is the lead singer of my band, Random Colour. I am the drummer in an all-girl rock band. [livejournal.com profile] karine made an icon for each member of the band: herself, me, [livejournal.com profile] toughlovemuse, [livejournal.com profile] ai731 and [livejournal.com profile] owldaughter. We rock. :)

This icon is another text quote from Babylon 5, which is repeated often from the start of the show. It's another creation of the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] curtana. I rather like the quote, as it reminds me that the world is made up of shades of grey, and that sometimes one doesn't have to occupy the spotlight in order to be a vessel for change.

I was going to use the title "Not dead, just tired," but the auto-fill on my LJ form informed me that I'd already used it. Egads.

Worked a double shift Wednesday to Thursday. Am very tired, accordingly. Had a lovely morning with [livejournal.com profile] curtana yesterday, although I was a little out of it, having worked 16 hours the day before and been awake for 24 hours straight.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank the lovely fairies who cleared all the snow from my front steps and balcony. Coming home at 11pm yesterday, it was a terrific and very pleasant surprise. Thank you so very much. :)

In only slightly-related news, my recycling box is buried in a snowbank. I fear I shall never see it again.

Had dinner with the parental units to celebrate my mother's non-birthday at a nice Thai restaurant. My ever-active conscience spent most of the evening whispering that much of my food had traveled thousands of miles to get to my plate. Stupid conscience. Can't even have Thai food without feeling guilty now.

Okay. Going to go crash now. More later.

Busy day yesterday. Band practice, then running around for errands, then off to [livejournal.com profile] aislingtheach's birthday party.

Band practice went really well. It was just me, [livejournal.com profile] ai731 and [livejournal.com profile] owldaughter, and we practiced Enter Sandman until it begged for mercy. Good times.

Because my bandmates are also writers and are pretty awesome, they let me bounce ideas off them for Crisse, des zombies! on the way home, and made some very helpful suggestions. With any luck, I'll be able to form all of that into a coherent narrative. I think I shall buy myself a map of Quebec and fiddle with it for a while, too.

Errands were hectic, as errands always are. The local Jean Coutu is having issues with its baskets: namely, they don't have any. That makes carrying anything more than three or four items a bit awkward. When I questioned the cashier, she did everything but throw up her hands in despair. Apparently they don't have many baskets to begin with, and they've been disappearing (probably snitched by unscrupulous clients). I had to buy a hairbrush, having cleverly forgotten mine at my parents' on Friday. *sigh*

I also forgot all of my stuff at home when I went to [livejournal.com profile] aislingtheach's birthday, which was highly embarrassing. I didn't forget my bus tickets, but that's about it. If I'd forgotten those, I probably would have remembered to pick up everything else on my way home, but as it was I arrived empty-handed.

I am going to get this stupid problem checked out tomorrow morning. *grr*

The party was a great deal of fun. I walked in only to be met by a WALL of balloons. It took [livejournal.com profile] aislingtheach and a few friends five days, but they filled the apartment with balloons of various colours and sizes (there were some HUGE ones, too!). It was terrific. I met some neat new people, which reminds me that I should go find their LJs, and we chatted up a storm and had balloon fights and ate like kings. [livejournal.com profile] queen_bi is an excellent cook, although I agree with her assessment of the avocado-and-tuna balls: not quite there yet. The stuffed peppers were delicious, as was the banana... umm... thing, for dessert.

Got home very very late. Overslept, not surprisingly. I am physically incapable of sleeping less than eight hours these days, not matter what time I go to bed, no matter what time I plan on getting up. My body simply shuts down until I've slept for eight hours, no questions asked. It's a little disconcerting.

Now I have to get dressed and get going. Missed meeting, due to going to bed super late, but them's the breaks.

It's ridiculously difficult to get in touch with anyone who might have red wriggler worms to sell.

Eco-quartier is closed from Friday to Sunday, inclusively.

The other number I tried (I was told "worm swap" but it's somewhere else) said they wouldn't have worms until April.

Worm Swap didn't answer their phone.

Sustainable Concordia didn't answer their phone.

Pousse-menu answered, but only after I tried three times (every 15 minutes).

So I'm off to Pousse-menu later today. I'm going to take a shower, hie myself to Best Buy for a camera, and then to Pousse-menu for worms. I hope their worms aren't as stupidly expensive as the other stuff, because I am leery of the prices listed on their website. They're selling the whole worm-kit for over $70, whereas I paid $13 for my box. Yeah.

GIP for environmental stuff!

Okay, shower.

Where the hell did the "backdate entry" option go? I have looked everywhere on the update page, and all I can do is "date out of order" which doesn't actually let me backdate. Dagnabbit.

My phone isn't working.

More specifically, I can't seem to make outgoing calls. I have yet to test whether I can hear anything if I can answer the phone, but I have no dial tone on my phone. All I get is static.

I have received a couple of calls which at the time I let go to my answering machine, and that seems to have worked fine.

I don't have time for this. Not now, not for several months. This problem had better fix itself by the time I get home tomorrow morning.

Also, I really, really wish LJ would stop acting up all the time. I get constant "database busy" messages, and one time out of three it doesn't post my entries (like just now) but simply refreshes my "update LJ" page. No, thank you: if I wanted to refresh, I would have hit "refresh" and not "update."

:::ETA:::

And now LJ seems to have randomly eaten 3 of my icons.

I give up.
