Since the new friending meme, I've seen people linking to "about me" posts, that go into incredible detail about their lives, their family, their personality, their beliefs, their values, their hobbies, and a host of other things.

I had something like that in my LJ profile for a while, but then it became so horribly outdated that I deleted it, and never bothered to write a new one. I'd promise to do that, but it would very likely be a lie, or it will take me another five years to get around to it.

A quick word about content, and how I deal with trigger warnings )

So, anyway, now is your chance to ask me about stuff! Want to know about my religion? How I feel about body issues? My taste in music? My extremely important opinions about frogs? Go for it! I will answer to the best of my abilities in the comments, and then if I'm on the ball I will link back to my answers in the body of this post. Kind of like a comment-fic meme, only without the fic. ;)

For today's topic, [livejournal.com profile] miseri asked me what the wackiest thing about New Brunswick was.

Now, there is a long list of wacky things, but I have to say that the local French dialect is really what stood out for me. Remember, my work is done over the phone, so people's voice and language are usually all I have to go on. So getting calls from people speaking Chiac (I don't even know if that's how it's spelled, but the internet tells me I'm right) was a heck of an adventure.

I am a francophone by birth. A French Canadian, born speaking la Langue de Molière and the whole nine yards. Going to New Brunswick is a lesson in an entirely new language, or at least a new dialect. Most of the time, I had no idea what people were saying. Chiac seems to be comprised of 50% French, 30% English, and 20% mashing all your words together and speaking three times faster than the average person, so that every sentence comes out as one giant garbled string of syllables.

Everyone who came from out of province had the same trouble I did, so we all commiserated with each other about the incomprehensible local dialect, and muddled through as best we could. After all, when you're working 911, you can't just shrug and move on to the next caller. You have a responsibility to find out where the caller is, what they need, and get them the appropriate help. A lot of my calls involved getting people to repeat themselves over and over and over and over. "Slow down," I'd tell them. "Say it again, please. Can you spell that for me? More slowly. No, even MORE slowly. Okay, where is that? What? No, you're going too fast again."

Obviously some callers were stressed and frustrated, but for the most part they were really great with us. Most callers knew that we were there from other provinces doing relief work, and so they were incredibly patient.

My favourite name from the region was Elsipogtog. Pronounced EL-SEE-BOOK-TOOK, more or less, and depending on who you ask. It just sounds funny. :)

Best phone call was from a man whose wife had injured herself.

"Ma femme ah fallé en bas d'la steppe!" he informed me, sounding rather concerned. "Ah enfargée dans l'chien!"

Luckily this was toward the end of my stint there, so I understood immediately that he meant: "Ma femme est tombée dans les escaliers. Elle s'est enfargée sur le chien!" Which translates to: "My wife fell down the stairs. She tripped over the dog."

As I was getting his information, he kept holding the phone away to tell his wife: "Grouille pas plus qu'y faut, là!" Which was adorable. It sounded like she kept trying to get up, and he was exhorting her to stay still, but "grouiller" is a very particular kind of verb, which I'd never heard used in that particular context.

Anyway, it all worked out. I got them an ambulance and first responders, and all was well.

The other really cool and unusual thing about New Brunswick and the areas around there are the incredible tides, but alas I didn't get to witness any of them first hand this time around. Next time I will go and blog extensively about them!

[livejournal.com profile] tx_cronopio wanted to know my thoughts on quinoa, whether it was in fact a tasty grain or an overrated fad.

2013 was the International Year of Quinoa, so this post is almost on-topic. If only it were still six months ago. ;)

My thoughts on this subject are not overly complex. I quite like quinoa. It's super tasty, though I find it a little expensive for what it is and don't seek it out as a rule. I also don't really know how to cook with it, so my experiences with it are limited to when other people have cooked it for me in various ways, usually in the guise of quinoa burgers. Here's a pro tip: eating too many quinoa burgers will do unfortunate things to your insides.

That being said, it has been brought to my attention that quinoa is not the most socially responsible grain to have around. It can only be produced in smaller quantities, since it generally has to be harvested by hand due to how delicate the grains are. Quinoa was considered a poor man's food until it got popular with yuppies, and so now it's believed that the increasing popularity of the grain in non-indigenous countries is affecting local food supply, because few other crops are compatible with the soil and climate in areas where quinoa is grown.

This is a subject of some controversy, but given that this has some precedent with other crops (asparagus springs to mind, but I'm sure there are others), I wouldn't be surprised if our latest yuppie fad was, indeed, harmful to the environment and/or local economies.

Um, that's about it. Sorry, I have no lengthy ideas on the subject. Quinoa is just not a big part of my daily experience.

So t! gave me the following topic: You're on a talk show. What five questions do you want them to ask you?

Let's have a warm welcome for our guest! )
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Bicycle)
Wait! Before you tell me that I skipped a day, I did it on purpose! The reason for this is that I'm at work (it's a very slow night), and the post for Day 19 will likely require pictures that are on my own computer. So I'm cheating and writing today's entry first.

[livejournal.com profile] tx_cronopio wants to know my thoughts on bicycles, which can be summed up thusly: Bicycles are awesome!

Here are the reasons bicyles are awesome:

1- They are fun to ride. It's one of the basic skills you learn as a kid, and there is nothing more fun when you're little than racing around with your friends on your bike. Bicycles are the best way to get around when you're little, in my opinion.

2- They are ecologically friendly. They don't require gas to operate, and thus are one of the greener forms of transport out there, with the advantage of being faster than going anywhere on foot.

3- You can attach trailers to them. If you need to transport groceries or lighter items or a kid, just hook up a trailer to your bike!

4- They are (relatively) inexpensive. After your initial outlay of funds, which can admittedly be expensive depending on what sort of bike you want, a bike will basically cost you nothing to use. Once a year I get a professional to tune up my bike for about $40, but experienced bikers know how to do this themselves. Every so often you might have to spring for new tires, but compared to the monthly cost of owning/leasing and operating a car, the cost is negligible.

In short, bicycles. Inexpensive, versatile, useful in a variety of ways, and also fun!

I have not biked much (or at all) since I moved to my house, but now that I'm moving I plan to dust it off and use it to do my grocery shopping at least during the months when the ground isn't covered in snow. I'll have to get it properly detailed and the tires replaced, but I'm excited at the prospect now. :)

On that note, I need to get back to work. It's been quiet thus far, but it could pick up at any second. Also, I seem to have tweaked my neck in my sleep, and it's been getting progressively worse all night. Time for some ibuprofen, methinks.

[livejournal.com profile] curtana asked me to talk about the places I would like to visit, or my dream travel destination.

This is going to be difficult, because I want to go to ALL THE PLACES. No, seriously, if money was no object, I would spend a lot of time travelling.

Don't know when I'll be back again... )
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Shit)
[livejournal.com profile] sorceror has asked me to talk about roleplaying games!

It doesn't feel like that long, but I realised recently that I've been roleplaying for going on fifteen years now. I discovered roleplaying in university, pretty much by accident, and it changed my life.

I waste it with my crossbow! )

[livejournal.com profile] miseri threw back one of my own quotes at me for June 16th's topic. So I'm going to write a probably short entry on inside jokes, because that's what that is.

It's an inside joke. )
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Bookshop)
I've been racking my brain for things to say about Brideshead Revisited, and I'm sort of coming up blank. I hadn't given the book much thought until last year, when there was a book-themed party for [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti. Guests were encouraged to dress up as a character from a book, and if they stumped the birthday girl, they got a little prize. [livejournal.com profile] miseri came in dressed as Sebastian Flyte, and I may have gotten a little excited and screeched "Aloysius!" Because of the bear, you understand.

I read Brideshead Revisited about twenty-five years ago, as a young teenager, right after the BBC mini-series had aired on public television. I had very much enjoyed the miniseries (if memory serves, it might have been on Masterpiece Theatre), and I remember loving the book. My mother loved both as well, and much like me, her takeaway from all of that was "Aloysius!"

At the time, though, most of the book's themes went right over my head. I enjoyed the story but ignored the exploration of what it meant to be born catholic or to convert to catholicism. I missed all the implications of a possible relationship between Sebastian and Charles, which someone else asked me about years later.

In short, this has been a terribly disappointing entry, because I have little to nothing to say, except maybe "Aloysius!" Which, you know, is not exactly the most insightful commentary I've ever come up with. ;)

So, [livejournal.com profile] miseri, I feel I must apologise for the paltry content here. Maybe next time I'll have more success with my posts.

[livejournal.com profile] curtana has asked me to write about the music I love. If I had infinite amounts of time, I would never get to the end of this subject, and tonight I only have about an hour in which to write this post, get dressed and run to work. Alas.

Working 911 here has been exhausting (in a good way), because not only is it quite busy but I also have to learn everything anew, since each comm centre works differently. So instead of waking up at 14:30 or even 15:30, I've been sleeping until 16:00 or even 16:30 every day (I also finish later in the morning, which means a bit less sleep than usual), and today I had a half-hour phone call with my parents, which resulted in my having even less time than usual for writing.

Let me sing you the song of my people! )

[livejournal.com profile] tx_cronopio asked me to talk about my own experience coming out. Most of you who read this LJ these days were there when I came out, but I suspect there are a handful of you who weren't, so I guess this might be new to you.

I feel like I should preface this with a few caveats. For one thing, everyone's coming out experience is unique, even if they share a few common elements. My own coming out story is even less typical than the ones you will usually find in North America, though it has nothing especially remarkable about it. In fact, my story is probably remarkable for the fact that it's wholly unremarkable, if that makes any sense.

Out of the closet, into the fire. )

[livejournal.com profile] ai731 has asked me to talk about my plan for living more sustainably when I move. There are still ten or so slots available for the tell me what to write about meme, if you're interested.

I apologise in advance for the fact that this entry is likely going to be more disjointed and a lot less comprehensive than previous entries. Mostly I'm writing it because I committed to writing these posts every day this month, and because I'm trying to distract myself from yesterday's really horrific trauma. Needless to say, the distractions aren't working all that well so far. However, I figure trying to write an LJ post is better than siting on my bed and crying, so that's what I'm going to do. Subsequently I'm going to go through with my original plan of cleaning up the basement.

Cheese! (In 1411, King Charles VI of France granted a monopoly on the ripening of Roquefort cheese to the people of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon). This is today's topic, provided by the prolific [livejournal.com profile] sorceror, for the choose Phnee's topic of the day meme.

Say cheese! )

It's Day 3 of the Tell me what to write about meme. No one has claimed June 5th yet, so now is your chance! In fact, well over half the dates are still empty, so you should go fill those slots. No, really. It's okay, I'll wait.

In the meantime, [livejournal.com profile] sorceror has asked me to write about Québec history today, as apparently on this day in 1608 Samuel de Champlain landed at Tadoussac with a group of settlers and founded Québec City there a month later.

I'm guessing [livejournal.com profile] sorceror might have meant the history of the city, but I'm going to ignore that and talk about the whole province, because I can. ;)

History! )

Today marks the second day of the Tell me what to write about meme.

[livejournal.com profile] hells_half_acre asked: What makes a good antagonist in your opinion? What kind of "bad guys" do you love to hate?

That's a loaded question, because I don't think there's only one good kind of antagonist. I have loved to hate so many different bad guys in my time, that I'd be hard-pressed to pick just one kind. It also depends a lot on the genre of the story, doesn't it?

So let's talk bad guys.

Villains, Bad Guys, and Antagonists, oh my! )

It's June! That means I'm going to write every day based on a topic of your choice. Not all the dates have been picked up yet, so don't let [livejournal.com profile] sorceror have all the fun! ;)

Today [livejournal.com profile] sorceror asked me to talk about classic film, since it's Marilyn Monroe's birthday. Before I get into it, I have to point out that I am in no way, shape or form an expert on film in any way. In fact, I don't even qualify as an amateur enthusiast. I just like watching movies, and some of those include classic film.

I don't have anything as exciting as the opera to report about today.

In which I talk about people not liking what I like. )

Aside from having people actively rain on my parade, I received some promising news at work yesterday. It turns out that another section wants me to come work overtime for them at least once a month. This will put a bit of a crimp in my schedule, but it will pretty much solve many of our financial problems, because a full twelve hour shift at double time is a significant amount of money. It's practically the same amount of money as if I picked up a part-time minimum wage job for 3-4 shifts a week. So at this point I'll just have to take the extra commute/travel time in the name of financial solvency. It's not a done deal yet, I'll only be hearing back for sure on Friday, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm also excited at the prospect of doing actual dispatch work again. I like my current job, but it's very technical and very text-based, and I don't get to talk to people very much anymore. It'll be nice to have a headset again and to work with my old dispatching software and deal with more immediate security concerns rather than worry about what level of classification my transmissions need. :)

Tonight I am going out with the lovel [livejournal.com profile] sultrysong. Plans are a little up in the air for now, but I'm hopeful that drinks might be involved.
