Dear Migraine Fairy,

I understand that you like repeat customers. They mean good business. I understand that I'm one of your best clients, too. However, three migraines in ten days is a little much. Especially since you left me alone for so long. I can only conclude that you're making up for lost time. So, with all due respect, could you spread the lovin' out a little? Seriously, I don't mind the migraines (much), so long as they don't come every three days and last two days each.

No love,

Me

Perhaps you should talk to a doctor about this.
A friend of mine had persistent migraines, and it was a sign of something worse.
So please get it checked out, ok?

Thank you.

I do get myself checked regularly. I've had migraines since I was eight years old (wow, has it really been twenty years? Yikes!), so I'm kind of used to it. The past two years haven't been all that bad, in reality. It's just the past ten days in which things have gotten a little out of hand again.

I'll be keeping an eye out (metaphorically), have no fear. :)

Can I be nosy and ask what the something worse was? My reason is not terribly good. I have a character in my NaNoWriMo novel who's been having persistent migraines and she's just about to find out that its something much worse. The question is what. I've been trying to research what sorts of severe medical conditions can be signaled by migraines, but I haven't had much luck.

It was a brain tumor. Basically she held off seeing a doctor about the migraines until she was loosing parts of conversations (blacking out for a few seconds). By the time she got it checked out it was at level 3. If I remember correctly there are 4 levels, and at level 4 you're screwed. At level 3, you're nearly screwed. I think the tumor was the size of a golf ball and had started to put out... roots I guess would be the best word for it. It's really hard to get out of the system by the time it's spread like that. So I think if you want your character to survive, make her discover it at level 1 or 2 so it's at least operable and treatable.
(You can understand why I'm concerned, right Mousme?)

Yup, but I have it on good (medical) authority that I don't have anything wrong with me that pills and several hours of sleep, darkness and quiet won't cure. :)

Thanks for your concern, though. 'Tis appreciated.

I was talking with a colleague the other day about diet, because we were sitting down to eat and he said something about the way he was eating that made me curious enough to ask (he was eating the meat first before the pasta). His story goes that one year ago he was having terrible migraines all the time when he started to get interested in metabolic typing and the books from Joseph Mercola. So my colleague, through some questionnaires and experimentation, worked out what his metabolic typing was and started adjusting his diet to match. The biggest thing he did was to eliminate a lot of sugar from his diet because it was causing him to go hypoglycemic an hour after a can of soda or a chocolate bar, because his body was triggering an insulin rush that would gobble-up all available sugar. This was a main factor in his migraines, but also was causing the "food coma" feelings at 11am and after lunch. After adjusting his diet the first thing he noticed was that his skin problems vanished in a matter of weeks. After that his migraines started getting less and less intense and eventually disappeared altogether, and he has lost 30 pounds in the last year even though he was already exercising regularly before.

Anyway, all that to say that you maybe want to look for dietary triggers for the migraines.

Wow that is fascinating. I am definitely going to read up on Joseph Merola and metabolic typing. I think my migraines are often triggered by sugar...
