Letter from Mim (and Papa!)
Jun. 26th, 2012 09:35 amMy parents and I were supposed to Skype on Thursday morning, but they never turned up. This is what happened instead:
June 21st, 2012
Woe,
We missed our rendez-vous this morning. Did I get the time wrong? I thought we said 11 this morning. Est-ce qu'il y a eu un empêchement?
Do write me back when you can.
Bacci,
La figlia
So I got these emails in return:
MTCGPF,
Le problème est imputable à l'éloignement par rapport à une source ordinatorienne... On se reprend dimanche à 11 heures chez toi ?
milbiz,
p
(Loosely translated: My Dear Very Grown Up Little Girl, the problem is attributable to our current distance from computorial access. Shall we try again on Sunday at 11 your time? A thousand kisses, p.)
Mizziness... you have to stand on your head to get WiFi or any other connection here. Even having a hard time with the hair dryer! Thousand hugs Mim & Pap
Then we had some timing issues...
A thousand hugs back!
I am working this weekend. Would Monday work for Skyping? Let me know!
Bizes,
La Figlia
But we sorted it out quickly:
MTCGPF,
J'avise ta maman: lundi à 11 heures à ton heure fera l'affaire.
milbiz.
papa
Angel,
11 am your time Monday sounds great. We shall be leaving here in the morning for Rennes. It is pouring buckets here. In the corner of our minute bedroom, a cylindrical object vaguely resembling R2D2 is intended to take the chill out of the air - or to take photographs or help the digestion, who knows. There is a super eiderdown on the bed which I supplement with one or two additional thick wool blankets which I found in the cupboard - in case - which is every night. You'd be surprised to know it feels like 10 below at night even though it's really 15 above.
So many English tourists are here I occasionally think we took a wrong turn and landed in England... of course "chilly" is normal for them and they come equipped with all sorts of chill-resistant clothing, while we (alas foolish Canadians) have our illusions of summer at the end of June and pack our bathing suits in our luggage.
A strange delightful town with a 1920s atmosphere; very Agatha Christie and feathered hats (don't ask why). Small houses, shuttered and looking extremely mysterious. Hundreds of French seagulls pose for photographs and look at you with a single baleful yellow eye, waiting for your baguette to fall on the ground. Anyway, it's all glorious fun and makes us think how much we miss you and your sense of humor...
Heaps of love from Pap and Mim - hope to see you on Skype tomorrow
Hopefully we will have more news from Rennes. Their trip comes to a close on Friday.
