Oh my GOD moving companies are expensive.

I think I will resort to begging and bribing people with excessive amounts of pizza and beer...

Oh my GOD moving companies are expensive.

They sure are. Earlier this summer, I looked into hiring professional movers to get me to Toronto from Fort Chipewyan. I was quoted >$17 000 by barge, >$18 000 by plane, and about $18 000 if I waited until the winter road opened. And none of those quotes included the cost of having their people come up to pack my stuff. It would be up to me to pack my own things.

So, Plan B. I packed my own stuff since I would have had to anyway. I hired a local guy with a truck to pick my stuff up and take it to the airport. Rather than charter a plane, I opted to ship my stuff out piecemeal on the freight flights that return to Fort McMurray empty. This will cost less than chartering the planes. I rented a one-way moving truck from Universal Truck Rentals for ten days, mileage included, from Edmonton to Fort McMurray to Toronto. I'm shipping my car by rail. Not counting hotel stays for my brother, my cats and myself yet, this plan is costing me about half as much as hiring professional movers would have.

Not counting diesel for the truck, either, I should have mentioned. Still, every way I look at it, It's going to cost less in money (though more in time).

The only reason my wife decided to accept the job in MI: they would pay for our move. Totally wasn't happening otherwise. If I were closer to you, I'd totally come help for beer, though.

I'll come help, just let me know where and when.

Also, I'm in the middle of my own move, and just got movers for the heavy and fragile furniture pieces (doing the friends+pizza+beer thing for the endless boxes of books and smaller stuff). They were great, professional, quick, and relatively cheap. I'd recommend at least getting a quote from them: http://www.godirectexpress.ca/
