Uphill both ways in the snow

The newbies at work are complaining that there's nothing to do. I am flummoxed. Granted, we're not exactly riding the rollercoaster of excitement, here, but damn. That is a hell of a lack of motivation, considering just how much we're being paid to do around here.

Maybe it's a generational thing. I am highly tempted to get myself a cane so I can brandish it and yell at them damn kids to get the hell off my lawn! Back in my day we had something called a work ethic, after all!

Ahem.

No, seriously, what the hell? There is always something to do around here. Procedures to be revised, calls to take, online training to do. There isn't enough time to get it all done. Sure, a lot of it is boring admin stuff, but the boring admin stuff needs to get done the same as everything else. These are the same people who whine that they don't have the tiiiiiime to do their online training sessions. Well, guess what? If you're bored at work, do your online training. The older people here have put in a crapload of time and effort to get this place to where it is today, and it almost feels like they're pissing on all that by implying the job isn't worth putting in their 100%.

I don't know. I'm as guilty of the occasional slacking as the next person, but claiming that there's nothing to do around here smacks either of laziness, bad faith, idiocy, or all three.

I hear you on the work ethic. I know someone who regularly quits jobs about 2 weeks after she starts simply because they're not perfect. She quit Starbucks because she couldn't have meaningful conversations with the customers.

I remember service jobs where I'd be cleaning something, or organizing something, or just doing something to be busy and to pass the time between customers, while my co-worker would be lounging across a counter complaining about how bored she was, how there was nothing to do. I would just scrub harder and grit my teeth with annoyance. As you say, there's always something to do. The people who claim otherwise are just plain lazy.

And this?:

I seriously doubt that, ot at least I doubt that what you consider "slacking off" bears much resemblance most people's idea of it. With you, it's probably more like taking a well-earned break between business.

Seriously! I will also admit to the occasional "I'm just going to sit here and do a couple of puzzles", but it's usually because I need to clear my brain from the MENTAL of what just happened THIS TIME.

It isn't just this generation... some of the people I work with are the same way, and they're in their 40s and 50s. Drives me insane. People from the main office in Fort Smith have actually called me to ask me to do something "because you're the only one I know will actually do it."
