Oh, Supernatural, say it ain't so!
Nov. 22nd, 2009 12:13 amDear writers of Supernatural,
I get that your show is about two brothers, and that the nature of the show means that it's really hard for them to form meaningful and lasting attachments with anyone, particularly women. I can get behind that, really I can. It's fine, and I really love watching the show largely because of the great buddy chemistry between your main characters.
That being said, did you REALLY have to kill off the only two recurring female protagonists? The ones who were strong characters with minds of their own, who were professional and capable and managed to not be stereotypes? REALLY?
You have NO WOMEN left in your show. NONE. Apart from the evil demon ones, that is, and you've even killed off most of them.
I am not thrilled with this. It was a well-written show, don't get me wrong. I cried. It was well done. I just don't agree with your basic assumption that women shouldn't really play a role at all in your show. It's more than a little discouraging.

Life and human associations are not about perfectly homogenous ratios of every imaginable token representative of some set of group identities — art occasionally reflects this diversity.

Date: 2009-11-23 02:50 am (UTC)So, a story about a group of guys in Antarctica, (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084787/) who are menaced by an alien lifeform capable of doppleganger-like feats of morphing really just doesn't measure up or work as entertainment because it didn't go into the backstory of all of these people's wives, mothers, girlfriends, daughters, psychiatrists, etc....yeah, right. Not everything has to be about everything.
Look, I don't watch television, so I'm not going to get into a stupid debate involving dialog quotations and episode recitals but I can read the Wiki page on the thing enough to understand the creators' stated rationale behind the show. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supernatural_(TV_series)) Face it, shockingly enough, there is a real honest to goodness show on television that just isn't about the women! Oh, the horror. It's a road show about a couple of guys! What a concept. Somehow, my pointing this basic fact out bothers you?
Great Hod, CSI: Miami has no strong, bisexual, octogenarian, differently-abled hermaphrodite main characters! How could there have been such an oversight — don't they know how many of these people there are in our socity! Obviously, it is a nefarious attempt by the series creators to marginalize these people! Call the press! Somebody somewhere is refusing to validate somebody's identity!
