Umm... my lone snail appears to have reproduced.

You may remember a few weeks ago my mini-saga with the goldfish? I decided not to get anymore fish, as their dying off repeatedly was just depressing me. So I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop, i.e. for the snail to kick the bucket.

Not only is he thriving (or she, or it, or zie, I guess, since it's hermaphroditic), but it seems to have managed to reproduce all on its own. There's a wee baby snail zipping around the aquarium now.

I am flummoxed.

See, I know enough about snails to know that they're hermaphroditic and that they lay eggs to reproduce. That means it takes two to tango, right? I saw no eggs, and there's only *one* new snail. I mean, I can conceive that maybe Fangio (that's my snail's name) did some frolicking with the other snails back at the pet shop, but if that's the case how come there were no eggs here?

I'm just perplexed now. o_O

Youre a MOMMY (too)

Hey, baby snails are a sign of good things to come according to ancient chinese hat blocking prophecies.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Do you have snail food? If not I'll root through my stuff and see if I can find some for you. Or find the right name of the stuff since I can't remember now!

:: zooms around madly ::

Whee! Snailses! :D

Random linkage : http://www.applesnail.net/content/lustrum/behavior.htm

And probably only one egg got laid for some reason. Of few enough that they just weren't that obvious...

Actually, I don't. Fangio has been subsisting on goldfish food for the nonce, and seems to be doing okay.

Actual snail food would be good, though, if you can tell me the name. :)

Methinks I'll stick to snails. They apparently don't kill as easily. ;)

Salad could be good too, actually, from what that link I posted earlier said.

:: shifty look ::

Still can't remember what snail food name is. It's the green pellets stuff. Circular. And green?

Maybe its a snail version of the second coming (y'know, it being a virgin birth and all)... Maybe its Jesus-snail, out to save snail-kind from the sins they're tempted into by Satan-snail.

And as amusing as that thought is to me, I'm going to shut up right now before I piss someone off :P

Wow.

With all the Roman Catholic themed literature that I'm reading now as background for playing Father Ziggy ([livejournal.com profile] holyziggy), that was the first thing that occurred to me too. 8^P

Awww, bless!

Maybe snail eggs are really little, or Fangio was sitting on them to stop them being eaten by the goldfish?

Awwww! *melts* What are you going to name the new one?

(I'd be all scientist-like and answer your question but I have no idea.)

Not surprised... snail eggs are incredibly small, and disappear into gravel. You can have snails, kill 'em off, wash the gravel, put it back into a tank, and still get more snails out of it. [shrugs] Sometimes, life just finds a way. :)

Oddly I was just discussing this with someone. We have a snail, and my friend said something about snails carrying their eggs for a while before actually laying them. So he said to watch for new snails.

Oh, and I'm so with you on the fish thing. If the two (left of four) Dev has now kick the bucket, I'm not getting more.

Congratulations!!

that's cool about your snail. i don't have any snails, but i do have an african dwarf frog, and sometime over the weekend he/she laid an egg with little green dots in it. do you know anything about african dwarf frogs? i wonder if i'll have tadpoles and then an infestation of african dwarf frogs that will take over my aquarium and kill my betta.

Hmm... I know nothing about frogs, except that there have to be two of them: one to lay the eggs and another to fertilise them. If you only have the one frog, I suspect you're safe.
