Seeds, redux
Feb. 8th, 2009 05:26 pmOkay, I'm about 75% done, and the other 25% will have to wait until I actually have the herb seeds that I want.
Right now I have planted three separate container-things of seeds. This is partially for my own records, so don't worry if you're bored and want to skip this entry. :)
Container 1
- Old German tomatoes
- Oxheart tomatoes
- Black plum tomatoes
- California Wonder sweet pepper
- Di Cicco broccoli
- Early Snowball cauliflower
Container 2
- Mary Washington asparagus
- Straight 8 cucumber
- Black Beauty eggplant
- Sturnon onion
These two containers are "self-watering" ones from Lee Valley. They come complete with a plastic cover, so I put in plants which I think will need a little more shelter and TLC. I'm making a more-or-less educated guess about the whole business.
Container 3
- Scarlet Runner beans
- Blue Lake pole beans
- Cherokee Wax beans
- Sugar Snap peas
Container 3 is a big experiment. The label on the packets says I shouldn't plant these before the spring, so I used a few of the seeds just to see what will happen. If it doesn't work, then I'll still have more than enough to plant when spring arrives.
Container 4 will happen when I've acquired a bunch of herbs. It's already prepped with seed-starting soil, and is in a place that the cats don't normally go, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best until I can get it started.
I also have plenty of other plants and veggies which I won't be able to plant until the soil is workable. I have lettuce, garlic, carrots and potatoes, among others. I am very much looking forward to when the soil will be warm enough to work properly. Why can't it be spring NOW?
*sigh*
And that's it! Stay tuned for more exciting garden news when it will become available.

Date: 2009-02-09 01:42 am (UTC)Maybe it's a question of soil quality? Not sure. I'll keep you posted. Maybe I'll try starting some indoors as well, see what happens.
Seeding So Soon?
Date: 2009-02-09 06:50 am (UTC)I'm not bored, I'm drooling.
It's said that you can plant catnip and other cat-attracting seeds, and they'll ignore them - but if you transplant the same plants, they'll go nuts.
Must smell bruising in transplanting, don'tcha think?
