Okay, I'm about 75% done, and the other 25% will have to wait until I actually have the herb seeds that I want.

Right now I have planted three separate container-things of seeds. This is partially for my own records, so don't worry if you're bored and want to skip this entry. :)

Container 1

- Old German tomatoes
- Oxheart tomatoes
- Black plum tomatoes
- California Wonder sweet pepper
- Di Cicco broccoli
- Early Snowball cauliflower

Container 2

- Mary Washington asparagus
- Straight 8 cucumber
- Black Beauty eggplant
- Sturnon onion

These two containers are "self-watering" ones from Lee Valley. They come complete with a plastic cover, so I put in plants which I think will need a little more shelter and TLC. I'm making a more-or-less educated guess about the whole business.

Container 3

- Scarlet Runner beans
- Blue Lake pole beans
- Cherokee Wax beans
- Sugar Snap peas

Container 3 is a big experiment. The label on the packets says I shouldn't plant these before the spring, so I used a few of the seeds just to see what will happen. If it doesn't work, then I'll still have more than enough to plant when spring arrives.

Container 4 will happen when I've acquired a bunch of herbs. It's already prepped with seed-starting soil, and is in a place that the cats don't normally go, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best until I can get it started.

I also have plenty of other plants and veggies which I won't be able to plant until the soil is workable. I have lettuce, garlic, carrots and potatoes, among others. I am very much looking forward to when the soil will be warm enough to work properly. Why can't it be spring NOW?

*sigh*

And that's it! Stay tuned for more exciting garden news when it will become available.

Have you grown lettuce before? I have tried twice and all I get is tiny spindly things. I was wondering if they should be started indoors?

No, I asked the friendly guy selling the lettuce, and he confirmed to start it outside when the soil is warm. He said basically to watch it very carefully and make sure it doesn't bolt (apparently it bolts easily) and to re-sow seeds often in the beginning until the lettuce starts re-growing.

Maybe it's a question of soil quality? Not sure. I'll keep you posted. Maybe I'll try starting some indoors as well, see what happens.

Seeding So Soon?

I'm not bored, I'm drooling.

It's said that you can plant catnip and other cat-attracting seeds, and they'll ignore them - but if you transplant the same plants, they'll go nuts.

Must smell bruising in transplanting, don'tcha think?

I'm probably seeding too early. I'm impatient that way. :)

I couldn't say about the cat-attracting plants. Our garden is a cat magnet anyway.
