I was a bit anxious about being linked to the massive Linkspam of Doom, but so far there hasn't been a tsunami of angry commenters, which is all to the good.

Actually, a lot of the discussion in my post has led to some productive notions, and has allowed me to re-frame some of my own thinking, which is always a positive thing.

In spite of my misgivings about posting, this has turned out to be a positive experience for me, which is probably more than most people can say about RaceFail09.

I apparently just got linked to [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong's Linkspam list thing.

ACK!

Anyway, for those of you who might be wandering by, I'd like to point out that I am seriously not that interesting. I post random stuff about my life, which is interesting only to me and maybe some of my friends. Occasionally I try my hand at thinking, and it invariably gets me in trouble. :P

Uh, yeah. So... play nice, 'kay?

I keep coming back to RaceFail09. I really wish I wasn't, but it's troubling me, for obvious reasons, and not-so-obvious reasons.

I am not going to try to unpack the invisible knapsack here. I'm just thinking out loud.

In which Phnee tries to figure out what the hell she's talking about )

I keep swearing I'm done with this, but then I come back and poke at it some more, so I'm no longer going to promise anything. :P

:::ETA:::

I have apparently been linked into [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong's Linkspam of Doom thing.

So, dear New People Following The Fail To My LJ, I feel compelled to lay down a ground rule, should you want to comment.

Don't be an asshat.

This means no flaming, no personal attacks, no mudslinging, no outing people. Post in good faith, and with an open mind. Wait ten minutes before typing your responses, if you must. If you're still mad, then wait ten more minutes.

My friends (LJ and RL) are a varied bunch, with a wide range of experiences and opinions. The one thing they have in common in this LJ is respect of my space. I would ask that you also show this respect in your posts. (So far so good, btw.)

If you don't follow this one rule, I will ban you summarily, no questions asked.

This needs to be said, even though I'm pretty sure that my little corner of the internet doesn't intersect much with the much larger corner of the internet that has been in such turmoil lately.

Here it is: just because I am silent, does not mean I am not listening.

There is a certain virtue in understanding that one has nothing of real value or merit to add to a conversation (or debate, or topic), that has not been said before. There is a certain virtue in understanding that what one might have originally contributed is not necessarily right, or should even be said (again). There is a certain virtue in understanding that silence may be the best path to shedding preconceptions and arriving at a place of even better understanding.

I am silent, but not passive. I read, I think, I incoporate, and, ultimately, I learn. Sometimes, I think people underestimate this.

I appear to have missed the boat on what is being called RaceFail09.

Having now glanced at the ten gazillion posts on the matter, I am SO GLAD that I missed the boat.

I don't have the energy to get into that. I wouldn't have had the energy when it started, back in January. Egads.

I am well aware that the issues of racism and cultural appropriation and what have you need to be addressed and called out when the need arises. As it happens, many, many, MANY people are involved in the fray, and I don't see the need to add that much more to the verbiage.

For those of you who, like me, have no idea what this is about, [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong has been collecting links under the tag gcadod 09. Be prepared, there are hundreds of links in there, going back all the way to January. Some of it is good, some of it is cringe-worthy and hair-tearingly awful. You have been warned.

That's all I'm going to say on the topic.
