mousme: A picture of Wol from Winnie the Pooh, holding a note that reads "Gon Out. Backson. Bizy. Backson." (Back Soon)
You're getting another really short update, because it's nearly midnight and I desperately need sleep. It's been a long day.

For ONCE the house inspection went really well. There are some minor issues with the house that will have to be addressed over time, but nothing that can't be handled and nothing that looks like it will cost an arm and a leg. The garage is actually an old barn that's in rough shape, and it's still structurally more or less okay but will likely have to be torn down in a few years.

I drove to Montreal after the home inspection with KK (who came for moral support, bless her) and got my father to sign the paperwork I needed, and we figured out how to get a PDF of the account statement. I really hope the mortgage company fucking well accepts it now, even if it's slightly different than what they asked for, because what they asked for doesn't exist.

My parents were actually out when we arrived in Montreal, so since we had a couple of hours to kill we went to see the new Minecraft movie on a whim. It was cute, fun at times, but not particularly good, and not even Jack Black and Jason Momoa chewing up the scenery could save it. I recognized the younger actress from The Good Girl's Guide to Murder, which was fun. I really enjoyed that show.

I have now signed a modification to the house offer so that the owners will fix a small but important issue with the furnace, sent the payment to the home inspector, and sent the latest round of paperwork to my mortgage person. I also checked on the quail to change out their water (they are filthy things who like to sit in their water dishes) and added food tonight since they'd gone through it all since I gave it to them last night. Tomorrow morning I'll be going to a local feed store to get more quail-appropriate food, since chicken layer feed doesn't have quite enough protein in it for quail.

One day I will have a bit more time to come back and update in detail, but today is not that day.

Catch you on the flip side, friends!

I don't have a specific topic for this entry, just general catching up and making plans —most of which will never come to fruition, knowing me, but it's nice to dream. It's what my mother calls "building castles in Spain." I seem to recall that has a historical origin somewhere... hang on, I'm going to go look it up. Okay, I'm back (not that you can tell in textual form that I was gone), and the internet was mostly unhelpful, but it seems to stem from Charlemagne's abortive attempt at conquering Spain. So, there you go.

Oh, and before I forget, I saw Ghostbusters last weekend with [livejournal.com profile] toughlovemuse and [livejournal.com profile] owldaughter, and it was amaaaaaaaaazeballs! I can't emphasize how much I enjoyed that movie. It did have some problems, but overall it was fun and engaging, and the women were all fantastic, and there was not one single fat joke in the whole movie! I was sort of bracing for impact on the latter, because of Melissa McCarthy. She's a fat woman in Hollywood, and the price of admission for that is to constantly have to make jokes at your own expense about your weight. I understand that that's how it works, but it doesn't mean I have to enjoy fat jokes. There were none, not even jokes about food apart from a running gag about wonton soup having a bad soup-to-wonton ratio. It was glorious. I have also joined the legions of fans who are super in love with Jillian Holtzmann. She has the most bad-ass fight sequence in the movie:

I mean, HOT DAMN.

She's weirdly not my favourite character, but she's definitely the character I'd want to hang out with/possibly take on a date. She's arguably the most brilliant/mad scientist of all the women, and she is entirely glorious.

If you haven't seen this movie, you should definitely go watch it (unless you are not into this sort of movie at all, in which case you probably won't like it).

I'm back, safe but tired. Am watching Die Hard. Am beginning to think that I'll never be able to watch this kind of movie again. Fresh out of my dispatcher course, complete with a section on hostage taking, the movie is making me grind my teeth.

Yes, I get that Bruce Willis is supposed to be the hero. Unfortunately, I find it really hard to accept that the entire L.A. police force is completely and utterly useless and incompetent —maliciously incompetent to boot— up to and including their dispatchers.

I won't begin to enumerate all the things the movie has got wrong so far: I'll wear out my keyboard if I try. It's seriously compromising my enjoyment of the film as a whole.

On the plus side, I now finally understand [livejournal.com profile] gmarc's user icon. ;)

After a day of running errands, I treated myself to Up!. As usual, Pixar did not disappoint. It treated a difficult subject with delicacy and whimsy and a great deal of respect. I cried a lot (S.O.P. with me and Pixar films), and laughed even more. It was lovely, and in spite of my misgivings, much like the ones I had before going to see WALL*E, I was absolutely charmed.

I loved the dog. I loved all the characters, really, but the dog especially. "My name is Doug! I have just met you and I love you! I was going to... SQUIRREL!" Awww. <3

Anyway, yes. Much love for the movie. Much, much love.

Another busy week ahead of me. I have work, the gym, the dentist, a hairdresser's appointment (my hair is falling in my eyes and I can't see!) and a whole bunch of errands that I didn't get to this weekend. I have [livejournal.com profile] tcaptain and [livejournal.com profile] maya_banana's wedding this weekend for which I must be ready. Most of this week I'll be working evening shift, but today I switched with Lanky!Coworker so she could have some extra time at home with her husband who also works evening shift.

So this afternoon I'm going to the gym, then I have to go grocery shopping. I have almost run out of a bunch of staples, and worse I have almost run out of cat food and cat litter, which is Not Good. I am also almost out of laundry detergent. Speaking of which, I finally got around to using my clothes line yesterday, and went to bed in sheets and pajamas that smelled like lilacs (the neighbours have a tree near the clothes line). It was nice. :)

My life is exciting, isn't it? After the grocery shopping I'll be doing some cooking, and heading to bed hopefully at a decent hour.

I watched Hellboy last night, and since I'm not at all familiar with the comic, I thought it was pretty cute. Nothing to write home about, but cute. I hear the sequel is pretty terrible, but since someone lent it to me for free I may at least start it to see if I enjoy it.

Mostly what I want to be doing these days is staying home and puttering in the garden. This isn't going to happen for another two weeks, but I'll take what I can get. Next week I'll be working night shift (yay), so maybe I'll be able to get some work done in the garden in the early morning before going to bed. At the very least I need to water the garden when it's not raining. I finally bought a garden hose, and let me tell you it has made a WORLD of difference in how much work it is to keep the veggies watered. My new nozzle comes with seven settings. SEVEN! It's very exciting.

Watchmen

Went to see Watchmen with a bunch of people last night. Time for LJ-user sightings! There was [livejournal.com profile] jteethy, [livejournal.com profile] karine, [livejournal.com profile] adamofeden, [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti, [livejournal.com profile] toughlovemuse, [livejournal.com profile] chibipunkdemon and Phil-who-hasn't-got-an-LJ. It was really nice seeing all my friends, many of whom I hadn't seen since Capricornucopia on January 10th. Eesh. Where does the time go?

The movie was fun, but suffered from inadequate writing, I think. It also ended about four times. Possibly five. It was very pretty, though some of the effects were... odd. I haven't read the graphic novel, but I understand that the movie modernized a bunch of things, and then lovingly re-created others the same way, which was jarring for me: some of the gizmos looked wildly out of place. The same went for the costumes.

Mild plot spoilers behind the cut )

The movie was also horrifically violent. I think I may have damaged poor Phil's hearing permanently with my squeaks of horror. There's only so many instances of bones splintering through skin and the like that I can take. I mean, come on! It's not necessary to go into that much gory detail. I get it, already! Gah.

In short, it was entertaining, but had I known what it was I would have waited to see it on video.

Also, between the movie and moving the clocks forward, I only got three hours of sleep last night. I am now Cranky!Cat.

Made it!

I made it through the longest night, and then realized that I had to do my Christmas shopping. Went out and did that, and then treated myself to a showing of Quantum of Solace which was both better and worse than the last Bond movie.

I loved that they finally gave Dame Judi Dench an actual part to play, with real lines and real conflict, and wrote it for her. Best part of the movie, for sure, although it was a bit shaky at times.

I like the new Bond, despite his apparently unsophisticated past. He still gets in some good one-liners, is far more believable physically than good ol' Pierce, who always looked as though he might break in two at any moment, and pulls off the charm quite well.

The rest? Enh. At least they're not doing weird sci-fi-esque villains anymore. The bad guy wasn't all that villainous (I way preferred the villain from the last movie), but he was certainly a bad guy. The action sequences almost ruined the movie for me. There were SO MANY of them, and they were ALL filmed in this stomach-turning, jolting-camera style: CONFUSO-VISION!

I had fun, which is the main part. They went off-script a bit with the Bond Girls (he only sleeps with one!), but it made sense for the story, and I actually liked what they did there.

So overall a good time. You don't need to see this on the big screen though, if you're considering going and haven't decided yet. Wait for the DVD.

Two hours of snowshoeing yesterday and I am wrecked. Had a great time with [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti and [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave. The Wuh-Mun wasn't home from her trip yet, and I was sad to have missed her, but her sistern Karen was visiting with her two Siamese cats (they're a mix of chocolate flame point and, erm, I forget the other), so I bonded with all three. 'Twas very pleasant. We wandered out on snowshoes, went by the beaver dam and an abandoned farmhouse, and re-visited Mark's Island, where [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave and I built a lean-to two years ago (that's where the photo was taken that I used for this icon). The lean-to is still there, although a little the worse for wear since it hasn't really been maintained.

One nifty thing about the snow is that you can see animal tracks remarkably well. We saw turkey and rabbit tracks, and an owl strike which was very impressive, as well as deer and the Elusive Canadian Snow Hamster (ask [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave to show you the picture he took). At one point we scared an entire flock of turkeys out of a field and into the woods. Wild turkeys are very pretty indeed.

I caught a quick glimpse of [livejournal.com profile] wultabat and [livejournal.com profile] looking4wings while I was at the Fearsranch, but it turned out that we couldn't spend much time together. Next time. :)

There was snowshoeing, and Tim Horton's doughnuts (they don't heap disgusting amounts of glaze on their doughnuts in Ontario, it's very exciting), and then we went to the pizzeria in Alexandria for lunch. Good times. :)

When [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti and I returned to Montreal we stopped by my place so I could get dry socks (turns out my Magnums are no longer waterproof at all, so I shall have to buy something to seal them with again) and my citified boots, and then we wandered off to the movies.

The Queen, which was my first choice, was sold out. So we went to see Because I Said So instead. Umm, it was bad. Diane Keaton is a fabulous actress, but not even she could save the movie. For one thing, they gave her terrible, terrible lines to work with. Mandy Moore was, well, Mandy Moore. Girl couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag, and all she does is wander around looking pouty and smug. It's too bad, because if the writing hadn't been so crappy, it might have been an entertaining movie. Instead, I spent a lot of time wishing the characters would shut up.

Now I am going to have coffee, and head out to my game. Overslept this morning, again. *sigh*
