This isn't even one of those times when I thought "Ugh, I'm tired, maybe I'll just post another day." I have not had more than thirty minutes to myself at a stretch since... um... *thinks* I think last week, maybe? Possibly? I don't quite remember. In order to get a proper LJ entry done, I generally need a minimum of thirty minutes, and those entries are usually not particularly long or in-depth.

My life for the past two and a half days )

I forgot to set my alarm the day before yesterday, so I only woke up at 7:00 because Bean was actually quite quiet when he got up (apparently at 5:30!). Since I'd gotten a late start to the day I tried to make up for lost time. Bean had already had breakfast, and he and [livejournal.com profile] pdaughter were slowly getting ready to go to class, so I emptied the dishwasher, started loading it up again, killed a bunch of ants (if they don't want to die, they can just refrain from coming in my house), and got dressed.

I had a pretty productive day, even if I do say so myself. Full day behind the cut. )

Okay, I'm still too angry to post about OSBPGate, but other stuff happened today which I wanted to post about.

For one, I managed to get my new worms. They are now happily ensconced in the old bin (which I emptied out into the garden and hosed off beforehand), along with a bunch of earth and newspaper. This time around, I am keeping them the hell away from the cats. They are going to chill for a week to adapt to their new home, and then I will start feeding them delicious veggie scraps.

I also went to Home Depot about my floors -the one on the border of Westmount on Courcelles St. What a difference! Not only were the staff polite, friendly and informative, they went out of their way to help me. I had no fewer than five(!) employees ask me if they could help. Two of them referred me to their colleagues, who were better-placed to answer my questions, but both accompanied me to the aforementioned colleagues and made sure that I wasn't made to wait. In fact, one of them apologized for the wait, when I hadn't been standing there for more than four minutes. I got clear explanations, helpful suggestions, and a run-down of all my options, including what they thought would be best for my situation and budget. They gave me price ranges, troubleshooting tips, and were all-around awesome.

I am going back during my week off to rent a floor sander. I am going to try sanding and re-varataning the floor, rather than replacing it entirely. The staff at Home Depot encouraged me to try this first (and a few other people on my flist suggested this as well). I am cautiously optimistic.

The rest of the day was spent sleeping. Between the bright!happy!sunshine and the heat, sleeping during the day has become something of a challenge. Still, I appear to be doing okay so far. *knocks on wood*

Having been told that it would cost me a minimum of $700 to replace the little section of floor in my dining room (that the cats ruined: thank you, Feline Forces of Entropy), I am seriously considering doing it myself, given that the cost of materials would be about 1/3 that price.

Has anyone on my flist replaced hardwood flooring before? It's the stuff made out of little squares... *rummages online to find a picture*

Okay, this:

I figure it can't possibly be that hard to do, given time, application, and the right tools. So I appeal to you, dear flist: what the hell kind of tools would I need for this? I'd need to pull up the existing floor, and then put down the new one. I know I need the wood itself (it comes in convenient packages) as well as the glue-stuff to stick it in place, but what else? Is there a specific tool to pull up the floor, or can I use the back end of a hammer?

Eventually I will know how to do all this myself, but right now I'm still at the bottom of the learning curve.
