Oh, man... not enough sleep, dammit...
Aug. 24th, 2003 12:14 pmGoodbye party for
curtana,
forthright and
ipanicked on Friday. Would have been so much more fun had I not had a splitting headache the entire time. Wheedled some ibuprofen out of
ipanicked, and things improved slightly.
Took photos, told gaming stories, listened to gaming stories, lamented the sorry state the Guild is now in, wondered where various of our friends had ended up, etc. etc.
ipanicked got rather sloshed, but not too badly.
*sigh*
That's a pretty significant portion of my friends who are leaving town indefinitely/for a really prolonged period of time. I don't have that many RL friends to begin with, so it's kind of hard to see them all traipsing off to various parts of the globe. Not that I can blame them: the job opportunities in Toronto are way better than they are here, and if I had the chance to go to Belgium for six months I would jump at it (provided all my cats were taken care of and what have you).
ipanicked has quite the little set-up going for the moment, I might add. He's house-sitting for his in-laws on Cedar ave., which is smack dab in the Good Area of Town. My mother lived there when she was younger, and I lived about four blocks away growing up (up until I was 21 or 22). The houses on Cedar have really interesting gardens, since they're built on a slope, and this one had a beautiful patio at the back, complete with gorgeous garden filled with peonies and other bush-like flowers that I couldn't identify because it was dark and I'm not exactly a horticulturalist.
They also had a gazebo (all the obligatory "I try to talk to the gazebo!" "I attack the gazebo!" jokes were made) and a barbecue pit, which was v. cool. In textbook Phnee fashion I forgot all the food and drinkage I was going to bring (*sigh*) but luckily there was enough to go around.
ipanicked made a yummy garden salad, and I will take this opportunity to make a mental note that pesto makes a very good alternative to salad dressing. *drool*
There were two very sweet cats there (both declawed) who had a blast prowling about the garden and yowling loudly. One of them broke the screen on the patio doors (actually, it had already done so a few days before), which was less fun. I don't know... my cats are destructive forces of nature, and I'm the first to admit it. However, they destroy my stuff. These cats belonged to a housemate who was simply renting a room there, much like
ipanicked. If they were my cats, you can bet your bootstraps that I'd be making all possible efforts to make sure they weren't destroying the house of the people who kindly let me use it. But that's just me. At least the girl was intending to put up a baby gate at the top of the stairs.
Yesterday was spent doing a massive clean-up. I invited my mother for breakfast, fed her eggs on toast and coffee, and then she helped me do some fairly heavy-duty cleaning. So I spent the better part of two hours on my hands and knees scrubbing floors (my kitchen is all sparkly! Yay!), and scrubbing various other surfaces.
I have to get rid of my favourite piece of furniture. :( I have a large pillow that I kept on my floor, made out of an old mail sack which had been stuffed with foamy pillow-stuffing stuff (that would be the technical term). Unfortunately, we discovered that the cats had been having a territory-marking contest on it, and it reeks to high Heaven. Nothing to be done except toss the bugger out. The only reason I didn't notice was that I kept it in a fairly out-of-the-way spot, and it was probably dry by the time I came home whenever the kitties decided it was vital to pee on it.
*sigh*
Anyway, so that's being ditched ASAP —well, Tuesday, since that's when the garbage gets picked up, so in the meantime it's stinking up my front entrance. *holds nose evocatively*
I organised a shitload of my papers, cleared out all the dishes from the sink (well, thanks to FLYlady.net there were only the breakfast dishes, but it was still a good number of dishes), brushed the cats, got the floors in four of my five rooms spotlessly clean (the bedroom still needs work, but it was the least in need of scrubbing, so it's all good).
The cats were understandably displeased by the intrusion and interruption of their routine, not to mention that they were sending vibes of hate and desperation as I'd run out of cat food. Nonetheless, they grudgingly put up with the flurry of activity and didn't get in the way too much.
Drove my mother home, and beforehand accompanied her to do some shopping, where I bought orange juice, milk, cat food, and picked up some rice pudding as a treat for myself (I really like rice pudding). She fed me a yummy steak and broccoli and a small portion of potatoes, and then I flaked out on her sofa to watch TV.
Odyssey 5 was a re-run I'd already seen (does anyone know if there's going to be a second season? If so, is Space picking it up?), so that was disappointing. I got to see the second-to-last episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I thiink I've been watching too much Sailor Moon with
joane, because when Angel appears out of nowhere to help her in that climactic fight, I was reminded far too strongly of Tuxedo Mask appearing to bail out the Sailor Scouts because, clearly, even though they're the superheroes, they're girls and thus not suited to this kind of thing as men are. ;P
Anyway, at least Buffy then kicked the ass of the preacher quite handily while Angel watched. :)
I'm going to try to catch the finale next Saturday, because I was mildly annoyed at missing it when it aired the first time. Once upon a time this used to be my favourite show (okay, five years ago when it was still incredibly good) and I've remained a pretty loyal fan, despite not having a television.
Speaking of television, I'll be off this afternoon to see a movie with Miranda (probably Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, but we might watch Better Than Chocolate instead). After that, we're going to watch the Showcase premiere of Six Feet Under, which is apparently fabulous.
Hmm... I wonder if I can convince her to make this a Sunday night tradition: Six Feet Under with Miranda. That would be nice. :)
Going to go make lunch now. I have some sausages that are going begging in the fridge, and
perseity will be starting fairly soon.
