Is it as pathetic as I think it is to weep uncontrollably at the end of a video game?

...

Yeah, I thought so.

Dear God, but that was sad.

No, really, it isn't. If you think about it, you spend a lot of time and emotional energy investing in the Final Fantasy games (what, like, over 100 hours? That's more emotional investment than I've made in some ex-girlfriends) and then you get to the big dramatic climax and BANG like that it's over.

I wept and sobbed at the end of FF8 - and then I started the whole thing over again.

Yeah, I figured that too. I felt a little silly, but then I also weep like an infant at the sad part in books and movies, and when I think about it I spend a lot less time with the majority of those characters.

I guess it says something for the writing and the story that I got this emotionally invested in the game.

Yeah, it teared me up as well. Give me a call this weekend if you've a minute and we can discuss, 'cause I'd love to hear your thoughts on it (and now I want to play it again!)

It's funny, I don't think any of the Final Fantasy games have happy endings...

As I was saying, none of the Final Fantasy games have happy endings...

7, 9, and 12 do. I think 4, 5, and 6 had happy endings too, but my memories have been dulled by time.

I wouldn't say 7 does, both because of what happens with Aeris, and the um...darkness of the future that's created (which is dealt with in the Advent Children movie). I can't speak for 9 and 12 to be fair, since I haven't played to the end of either.

If recollection serves, Aeris dies in the middle of the game, people are sad, and then move on. Then at the end of the game they defeat the bad guy, and happy lifegiving plants return to the world, sweeping away all the human made corruption.

Advent Children is in my opinion more of a possible future that would make an interesting movie, rather than the definite future that happens after the game.

FF9 had a happy ending, if I recall... Main character, presumed dead, isn't, and shows up at the very end.

No, we're not talking teary. We're talking honest-to-goodness sobbing. I don't know who broke my heart more: Yuna or Auron. I shall give you a call, certainly. :)
