I'd like to know what you consider your Reason For Being™, right now.

(Of course, you can have more than one, and of course that can change over time. Indulge me, here.)

Is this something that I currently live for or what I think I was put on this earth for?

Because I have no idea why I was put on this earth or even if there is a reason specific to me.

However, right now, what I live for is my vacation, even if it will be minus two people. That and being able to walk normally again.

My 'reason for being' is without doubt my esoteric work.

To love.

In the way that makes other people's lives (hopefully) better.

in the short term, vacation and my sister's imminent nuptuals, but I live to make my place in the world, and it's not always easy because sometimes I have to turf people out of my space, and as much as I'd like to be content, I think I'm still searching for the exact 'spot' I want to claim as my own.

We are ends in ourselves and require no justification for our existence.

I don't know about anyone else, but I was not justifying my existence, I was explaining what I live for.

[livejournal.com profile] mousme asked us to name a "Reason for Being." I'm answering that there is none necessary. That is the way I read the question. On the other hand, one could, as you apparently did, look at the question as an implied querry about values, which necessarilly sustain existence, but that is a broader or looser interpretation, in my opinion, than the one I employed. I suppose the question could be taken either way.

Yes, there are definitely several ways to interpret her query, which was probably her intention at the outset! :)

Mine is simply to make the greatest lasting positive influence on the world that I can. This has several corollaries:

1) To live a net positive life, so that at any moment, should I die, I will have, to that point, given back to the world more than I've taken from it.

2) Live as long as possible. Preferably forever.

3) Ideas are immortal, and so may have longer lasting influence than great deeds.

To tie up loose ends and skip out on any more incarnations. Kind of a farewell cruise before I take the old soul off the bodhisattva circuit and go back into whatever. I do mean to enjoy it though! Yeah, no more incarnations unless I change my mind.

To learn, experience and enjoy life. Maybe. Sometimes the first two don't exactly include the third, but two outta three ain't bad.

I'm not certain I have a specific Reason For Being™ at the moment. I have reasons to change. I have reasons to stick with my goals. I have things I need to do in this world, but no Reason For Being™ really.

Nothing that's articuable anyway.

Today's raison d'etre is to find one, really.  Or to stop looking, in the sense that while the unexamined life is not worth living, the overexamined one isn't that great, either.
