There's something deeply satisfying about coming home and realising that your cats are all happy.

George, Pan-Pan and Gretzky were by the door to greet me, as they always are, and even Smudge wasn't too far away, which was a shock.

Now George is lying in his new favourite spot, which is in the middle of the hallway floor, with his front paws tucked demurely beneath him and his tail curled tightly along his body, his eyes half-closed in contemplation. Pan-Pan is installed comfortably on the windowsill in a pool of sunlight, and Gretzky is giving her leg a once-over, sitting beside me on the table as I type this entry.

Smudge has disappeared back into my bedroom and is either under the bed again, or on the windowsill in there, where he watches the birds in the lane behind my building.

He's really becoming a different cat here. He comes out regularly now, and is slowly but surely asserting himself with the other cats without hissing or arching his back. He comes when I call him (well, if he's within five feet of me he'll come), and he lets me pet him for several minutes at a time now. He even let me brush him on Friday, and I cut away some of the worst clumps of fur that couldn't be brushed out. Underneath all the dead fur and the mats he's actually a very pretty cat, and he seems to be feeling better about himself now that I've prettied him up and fussed over him and told him how gorgeous he is.

So, yeah: I love my cats, they love me back, and I'm just so very very happy that they're happy.

That's something that no one gets who hasn't had a pet that they really and truly cared about. There's really nothing like sitting down and talking to your cat and having your cat lick your nose and rub its head against your chin and purr, because it's happy just to be with you.

Okay, I'll stop now. :)

Surprisingly enough, he isn't. ^^;

I got him from my friend [livejournal.com profile] rotagar who's moving to Ireland and who couldn't find a home for his poor kitty, so I offered to take him as a last resort.

Poor Smudge has been in a state since he got here.

You can read about it here, and here.

I've since spoken to Mike (rotagar), who has clarified that he did on occasion try to detangle Smudge's fur, and that he always left food out for him, so I figure that the other cat must have been eating Smudge's food, and since Smudge spends so much time hiding from everyone he might not be too good at grooming himself.

Either way, poor Smudge has a long way to go before he'll be in perfect health.
