What's the olfactory equivalent of a mirage?

I mopped. I scrubbed. I cleaned. I replaced slipcovers. I cleaned some more.

Why the FUCK does this place smell of cat pee?

Curtains? Walls? Ceiling tiles? Cats mark in so many wonderful places. No matter how clean we kept the last place where we kept cats, there was always a hint. This is why they went to live at the farm when we moved here.

Tomorrow my wife is going to a house where there are usually 10-17 cats walking all over everything, and I don't think they use litterboxes. At least by the smell I think they don't.

Did any of the cleaning products contain ammonia? Ammonia smells like cat pee somewhat. Some cats also think that ammonia is another cat marking their territory, so some cats will spray on areas that have been cleaned with ammonia!

A vinegar and water solution is good at breaking down cat odour. You could try that.

I stay away from ammonia for precisely those reasons. I will, however, re-check those labels, just in case.

I have a product called Nature's Miracle (thanks to owldaughter which works well for breaking down cat smells.

I'm at the end of my rope here. I love my cats, but right now I'm contemplating getting them stuffed and putting them on a shelf. :P

Nature's Miracle can take up to two weeks to fully dissolve cat-pee odours. Sometimes with our cat we've had to soak the same thing every two weeks for months to get everything out. It is very frustrating. I wish you the best with it.

I recommend getting a black light from Canadian Tire - it illuminates cat pee stains like something off of CSI, and can be really handy for solving the lingering odour of 'oh my G-d, how did he get it THERE?' You have to use it at night, when the place is dark, and the pee glows blue.

I've only ever had female cats, spayed ones at that. I've never had a problem with this. Is it the males that pee everywhere?

I have three males, two of which were neutered late, and one spayed female.

I think it's a male cat thing, but I've heard of female cats peeing in inappropriate places because of UTI's and the like.

We've never had a problem with cats peeing before the two we have now. In our case the female started it and taught it to the male.
