So for those of you not in the know yet, I've been writing a zombie novel for National Novel Writing Month. It's being posted as I write it in my writing LJ, [livejournal.com profile] secret_history.

What's very gratifying is that it appears to have attracted some readers who are not, in fact, on my flist. For instance: [livejournal.com profile] baronmind had this to say about my humble little offering:

...there's a fantastic zombie story unfolding over at [livejournal.com profile] secret_history, currently titled Afternoon Snack of the Living Dead. Despite the jocular title, the story takes itself seriously. The character development is fantastic, the actions and responses realistic, and the entire scenario is horrifically believable. The story is this year's NaNoWriMo effort by mousme -- already past the 50,000 word mark, I might add, which is impressive in and of itself -- and I'd like to thank [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave for bringing it to my attention.

With reviews like that, how could you not want to read it? ;)

I managed to addict my friend [livejournal.com profile] exis, and he hardly even exists on lj :)

Oh, wow! That's really flattering! I wish all the strangers who're reading would post who they are so that I may bask in all the attention. ;)

Thank you for the pimpage! :D

Okay, I finally started reading this tonight. Three sections in and I'm utterly hooked.

This is awesome. Congrats.

Wow, I've read the first couple of entries and I _love_ the story so far. I'm surprised that it's not friends-locked, though; aren't you concerned about it being considered previously published if you write it openly? And I really want to see this book in print now! :D

Wow. Thanks!

I didn't even think to friends-lock it. I'll have to go look at the ramifications of that, and maybe lock the entries after all.

Glad you're liking it!

Please please take ASLD offline, right now, or it might not get to be even considered for publishing when you want to publish it. . .and you will want to publish it! Your friends and fans will understand. Really do it, please. And I'm saying this, even though I totally love what I have had a chance to read so far and can't wait to find out what happens next.

This way you are guaranteed people rushing out to buy it when it is published just to find out what happens next!

Hunh. I didn't know that. I wouldn't even know where to begin looking to get it published, though.

Some publishers will only consider buying rights for first publication, and some of them will consider a public web-posting to be first publication. Or so I'm told.

There are, of course, a few exceptions. The most notable one, in your case, would be David Wellington's zombie trilogy. The first book, Monster Island, was offered for free online and became incredibly popular. It was picked up for publication. The sequels are available online and are upcoming in print.

Still not sure if I'd want to take that gamble.
