Okay, folks. Now that I will, in the medium-term future, have a bit more money to throw around, I would like to get myself a digital camera. Bearing in mind that I don't have oodles of cash and am not in any way, shape or form a professional photographer or even a good amateur, I would like suggestions about a reasonable model to look into purchasing.

The payoff is that you'll all get nifty photos in my LJ after that (behind cut-tags, of course).

So. Suggestions? Horror stories? Anything?

We were lent a Pentax for our trip and it is *not* a fun camera to use. Too long a delay between pressing the button and taking the picture-- half the pictures I took didn't turn out.

I asked this same question and it seems like people are happiest with Cannon. I know that that's what I plan to buy.

I'd suggest that you try the camera out in store if you can. At least to see what the delay is like.

addendum

Do you have a good printer? The reason I asked is that we just picked up the Canon Pixma MP150 (it's a 3 in 1) and I am so in love with it. We paid $91 and that includes an extra $10 for the (slightly) extended warranty. They're being liquidated at Bureau en Gros so I dunno how long they'll be around.

I am a fan of the Olympus Stylus series. I'm on my second - the first got stolen :(

They have a nice range of easy setting, but you can do fancier stuff if you are more informed.

I have seen pretty good deals on some of the older models, in the 3-4 megapixel range, which would probably do just fine for what you want :)

I lovelovelove our little FujiFilm. They've probably got much better versions than ours out now (ours is three years old), but they make a lower-end idiot proof point-zoom-and-click model that fit our needs perfectly.

I'd also recommend going to the CompuSmart downtown; the one just south of the Bay, but I can't remember the street name. We got ours there, and the camera guy (Alan? Adam? Something like that) was awesome about showing us cameras, giving us options, talking prices - he actually ended up recommending one that would give him a decently smaller commission, because it was better for what we wanted it for than the flashy one.

Love my Canon. Just enough nice extras to keep me happy but still basically point and click.

I like my Kodak. The dock makes recharging and transferring easy, and it takes great pictures. It's a great little point and shoot.

I've had good luck with Olympus brand. Had a diff. one before, but now I use Aramis' camera. it is an Olympus Camedia Digital Camera c-700 Ultra Zoom. It's pretty old, but works very well. I would say if you get a refurbished or even used camera on ebay that should work fine.

I'm an Olympus user. Love it, but my experience with digital cameras is rather limited, so I don't know much about other cameras.
