Meanderings in the park

There's a small green space near where I work that pretentiously calls itself a park. It looks as though there might have been a building there once, for it's criss-crossed with low stone walls at right angles to each other that could well have been part of a foundation, once upon a time.

It's a pleasant little green spot with large bushes and smallish trees (not as small as some of the spindly things that try half-heartedly to grow in the middle of a sidewalk, but not really big either), and if you turn your back on the skyscrapers and resolutely fix your eyes on the greenery and ignore the sounds of traffic, you could almost imagine you were in the country.

I've been taking my lunch there recently. Can't think why I didn't before. Who knows? Anyway, I sat on a bench today (usually I sit on one of the walls, but they were all occupied, while the bench was free), to enjoy my sandwich. I was joined a few minutes later by a sparrow, who proceeded to take a very boisterous bath in the dust at my feet. She was joined a few moments later by a male sparrow whom I took for a while to be her mate. Then suddenly there were six sparrows, hopping and chirping, sending up large sprays of dust and arguing with each other over who would get the choicest spots, and generally looking as though they were having a perfectly marvellous time. For the next hour or sparrows flitted in and out, chittered and fought and played and scrabbled in the dust while I ate my lunch quietly and watched them. On more than one occasion I wished I had a camera.

I have to say, this was one of the best lunches I've had in a long time.

It is so nice to see you taking pleasure in the little things. I would have liked to have seen it too, at least the way you tell it! :)
