fearsclave's wedding was lovely. Picked up
kino_kid at 2pm and drove to the Godforsaken Howling Wilderness yesterday and arrived in plenty of time for the ceremony. Got caught up with
meallanmouse and
fishstalker, as well as
rotagar whom I hadn't seen in well over a year, closer to two, since he moved to Toronto. He looks very dashing in a kilt, as did all the men. I also got to meet the lovely
kirixchi, whom I will now be adding to my flist after this post.
The ceremony was shorter than I expected, but all the important elements were there, and it was wonderful to see both
fearsclave and Carolyn looking like they were about to burst from happiness. :) There were bagpipes and kilts and an exchange of the bride's veil for the Elliott tartan, and I managed not to weep uncontrollably throughout the ceremony. I'm very proud of myself.
Very nice to see everyone all gussied up.
looking4wings was looking especially nice in her new skirt, and I did double-take after seeing her in makeup for the first time ever. Everyone in that family cleans up really nicely.
We spent the entire afternoon and evening talking and laughing until our sides hurt and tears came to our eyes. We discussed everything from webcomics to hentai ("Oh no! Here come the tentacles!") and the difficulties of having to choose between children and careers, with sidetrips into creative writing and various fandoms and video games, and pretty much traumatised the less-geeky folk at our table, although they seemed to get into it after a while. There was a long discussion involving what we would do in the case of a zombie holocaust. All in all, a very good time.
The food was delicious, especially the soup and the cake. There was dancing and more chatting, and Carolyn's sisters put on cute little sketch based on The Sound of Music to welcome
fearsclave into the fold, and after a good deal more dancing, I drove Caroyln, one of her sisters,
kino_kid and
rotagar up to the Fearsranch, where
fearsclave built a bonfire. We sat around drinking beer and eating cold pizza and then the piper showed up along with two women and a man with drums, except that he was little too drunk to play properly by then. Then the other man made the fatal mistake of letting me have his drum, so I whacked away happily at it for a while and no doubt drove everyone crazy.
People drifted to bed around 3am, and I stayed up a little later, because there was still a small group of people I didn't know in the living room, and I wanted to make sure that they all either had a place to stay or a sober driver to get them home. Turns out I needn't have worried, because they had a driver and it was all good.
The only sour note was right at the very end, around 4am when they were leaving. It's a little complicated, and it was highly unpleasant, so I won't go into too much detail. There was a woman there whom I'd met at the wedding. We'd exchanged about two sentences total all day, and those had been innocuous enough. This would be the mother of
fearsclave's sister-in-law (the one married to his brother), who for some reason best known to herself suddenly decided to turn on me like a rabid dog. I haven't had someone be that purposefully mean and hurtful to me since elementary school. She spewed bile and vitriol, and I literally found myself backing up, hurled back by the waves of vengeful anger that poured off her. I don't know this woman. I'd never met her before yesterday. I have no idea why she decided to verbally abuse me. There was no mistaking the content of what she was saying: it was purposefully hurtful. Maybe she was drunk. Maybe she thought I was someone else.
One thing I do know: I hadn't planned on spending the last half hour of that day in tears.
Apart from that one thing, it was a fantastic day, and I'm so very, very glad that I had the privilege of being there when one of my best friends got married.

Date: 2006-05-02 02:56 am (UTC)Aw crap...
Date: 2006-05-01 04:51 pm (UTC)I am beyond irate that she would dare attack one of my wedding guests (let alone a dear friend who I consider to be a de facto sister) in my house at my wedding, for whatever reason. And it was utterly deplacé for her to have said the things that I've been given to understand she said (word about her outburst reached me this morning from another source).
I will be having words with the woman, and I will be demanding an apology both to Carolyn and I and to you as well. Would you like it in writing?
We may clean up well, but...
Date: 2006-05-01 06:25 pm (UTC)Great to see you, you looked wonderful yourself!
And as they say in the vernacular: Non Illegitima Corundum!
Spots!
Date: 2006-05-01 09:15 pm (UTC)What a distressing thing to have happen. I'm so sorry that she got you in her sights. As D has said, she's a pitiful excuse for a human being and we'd all be better off if she got run over by the closest dump truck. Even better if it was a honey wagon!
I hope that you can ignore what she said. What I heard was truly vile and disgusts me to no end. I love you sweetie, big hugs!
Re: Spots!
Date: 2006-05-02 02:55 am (UTC)The only explanation I could come up with was that she was drunk, but I was really taken aback by the violence of feeling that emanated from her. It was quite appalling.
She seems like a very unhappy woman. What she said was hurtful, but I think it's far worse that she felt the need to lash out at a perfect stranger on a day of celebration. She did say vile things, but you know what? She knows Jack and Shit and Jack just left the building. So I decided that I would exorcise it in a post, and leave it at that.
I'm glad she apologised to

Date: 2006-05-02 08:31 am (UTC)You looked mighty fine at the wedding, I'm sorry I wasn't able to spend some time with you. It was not good that I couldn't get to see all the great stuff that came after I left.
Any time you want, come on out. And I'm expecting some socks with heels ready to torn soon!
BTW, I don't think my email address for you is up to date, so if you'd send me your current one, I'll update my address book. I'm assuming you have mine?
It's 4 am, so Pepper thinks I should go back to bed!
Further to this...
Date: 2006-05-01 10:02 pm (UTC)Re: Further to this...
Date: 2006-05-02 02:50 am (UTC)Honestly, I don't really feel comfortable giving her my phone number. *shrug* If she can be that mean to someone she doesn't know, then I don't trust her not to use that phone number the next time she gets drunk and needs someone to beat on.
If I ever see her in person ever again, then an apology would be nice. Otherwise, I'm pretty much over it now. It was unpleasant, but I don't know the woman and the odds of my having contact with her again are slim. So, meh.
Thank you for doing this for me, though. I really appreciate it. You've always pretty much been a de facto older brother for me as well, and it's very nice to know that feeling is reciprocal. :)
*massive squishy hugs*
