Musings on 24

So, season premiere of 24 last night. I went to my parents' place and watched it with my mother, who is now hooked. For someone who professes to hate all things American, my mother is surprisingly easy to hook on some television programs. Maybe it's because a) Kiefer Sutherland is Canadian, and b) is the son of Donald Sutherland, who makes my mother turn into a squeeing fangirl (or as close to squeeing fangirl as my mother can get).
Anyway, two-hours of oh-my-God and screaming at the television. Well, internal screaming. My mother has trouble following plot twists in television programs (mostly because she doesn't see well, and so she can't tell some of the actors apart, which confuses her all to hell, especially when some of the good guys look like some of the bad guys), so I try not to add to the confusion. Mostly because, when she's confused, I have to explain things to her, and then I end up missing crucial plot points as well. So.
There will be spoilers beyond this point. I shall cut-tag this, so please don't say I didn't warn you.
Also, if some of my comments seem woefully ignorant in context, bear in mind that I've not seen the last two seasons yet, so some of the subtleties were probably lost on me. I really have to find someone to lend me Seasons 3 and 4.
1- Hour 1, and Jack kills someone in cold blood. No surprise there. I was actually surprised it took him so long to get around to it.
2- It's not a proper season of 24 without a Blisteringly Stupid Teenager to gum up the works. Maybe in Seasons 3 and 4 that didn't happen, but I was absolutely ready to pound in Kim Bauer's head by the time Season 2 was over.
3- Aieee! Palmer! Mind you, I thought he was already dead after Season 2. I went into this wondering who the next president would be, and then I saw him and thought "Yay! Palmer is still around!" Then I realised, "Oh, he lost the election." And then "Aieee! No! You can't do this to me!" Of course, I get two other seasons of Palmer to watch, which comforts me a little, but still.
Mind you, I was more upset when Mason died. I really liked Mason. He was so good at acting like an asshole *and* looking put-upon at the same time.
4- Aieee! Tony! Michelle, I don't care so much about. Maybe I'll change my mind after I see the other two seasons.
5- Good fucking Lord, is ANYONE going to survive the carnage? They're cutting down regulars in freaking huge swathes of character decimation. Yikes! (I know that sentence made no sense. Neither did killing off half the cast in the first hour or so...)
6- I realise that the DOD woman was Jack's girlfriend for a while, but I don't like her. I hope she's better in the other two seasons. Right now she just makes me want to smack her.
7- Was the present First Lady in last season? I like her. Nothing like ignoring the Crazy Person Who Really Knows What's Going On. I was halfway hoping that her husband was in on the conspiracy, but alas he's just turning out to be an idiot so far. Unpleasant, too. I miss Palmer already.
8- Could someone remind me of the name of the actor playing the new Big Bad? He's the guy who played Nick Knight in Forever Knight, and I spent a good portion of the time trying to remember his name. If no one can help me, I'll hit IMdB.
:::ETA::: Geraint Wyn-Davies. Never mind.
That's all for now. I'm sure I'll think of more as the day goes by.
