Okay, I just called the nice people at Mac 911, and the little man said it sounded like a problem common to iBooks, in which the "logic card" (he said it in French, I don't know what the real name in English is) goes wonky.

If I bring it in on Monday, they'll be able to do a diagnostic by Thursday, and tell me if that's the problem. If that's the case, Mac pays for the repairs up to three years after the original purchase date, even if the warranty has expired. w00t!

If it's not that, then it'll cost $40 for the consultation, and then we'll see.

So, hopefully [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave's friend EKH will be able to help me out on Sunday. If not, I shall bring Cleo to Mac 911 and let them do their thing.

I'm going to see if I can get the computer to work long enough tonight to bring it to my parents' place and "borrow" my father's extra disk drive. Maybe I'll be able to back up some of my stuff.

[Baldric]I have a cunning plan. [/Baldric]

YAY! And in the meantime you'll be writing on one of the spare computers you've been offered, right?

Yes. Previous histrionics notwithstanding, I shall continue to write.

I will in fact use my notebook for the most part, since there's always that pesky problem of transferring stuff from PC to Mac and vice versa, and I may go to my parents' place tomorrow and use my mother's desktop Mac which has compatible software with mine.

Actually, if I manage to copy my stuff onto disk tonight (not certain, but a possibility) I may back up my stuff on her computer temporarily and continue writing there as much as I can.

Ah, the logic board of death problem. The logic board is basically the motherboard. It has a tendency to go bad in iBooks. Is yours a G3? If so it's covered under the Apple lemon logic board fix.

Yes, it's a G3, and the little man at Mac 911 told me it was covered by Apple, if that's what it turned out to be.

*crosses fingers*
