I am listening to Ariel Ramirez' Misa Criolla. This one features Jose Carreras, and I really rather like it, although many of its critics say that his voice overpowers the rest of the music. I'm not convinced. The man is more than capable of subtlety, of modulating his tone enough to suit the rest of the score.

I've had a horrid earache since last Thursday, but it seems to be abating now, for which I am, accordingly, quite grateful. I was worried that I'd have to haul my sorry self to a clinic to make sure it wasn't an infection. But in my experience (and I had *lots* as a child), ear infections generally increase in pain if not treated, and while this got pretty bad on Saturday and Sunday, today it was all but imperceptible. Yay!

Okay, enough with that particularly mundane bit of news.

I bought my mother some fat white cyclamens for Mother's Day. They're her favourite, and looking back at last year, I see that I did the exact same thing. Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, I always say. She loved them, and I found a great little place on Wellington that's much cheaper than the places where she usually goes. The man in the shop was rather rude, but it was more in a quaint-crusty-old-gardener way, which somehow made it easier to take. He also knows his stuff when it comes to flowers, from the brief conversation I had with him.

Speaking of plants, I am growing a spider plant at work. This was mostly an accident. I don't really have a green thumb, but I'm giving it a shot. One of the managers, who has the same initials as me, which makes things a bit confusing, was moving her office, and accidentally ripped off part of her large spider plant. On a whim I stuck it in a glass of water, and I've been changing the water every two days or so. I'll be damned if the little thing hasn't gone and sprouted roots an inch long! So I'll be potting it this week and praying for the best.

I should probably turn my hanging plant, or else it'll all grow on one side.

Who knew I actually knew anything at all about plants? My mother must have rubbed off on me at some point without my noticing it.

I think I'll try to call it an early night tonight. Which reminds me, I need to feed the cats, lest they try to eat me in my sleep.

Speaking of Ariel Ramirez, there's a lovely little song by Richard Buckner called "Ariel Ramirez" that's currently one of my favourites. I could send it your way if you were interested... :)

Ear infection trivia

Actually, they nowadays know that most ear infections go away without treatment. When you and me were kids, they believed that the infections always have to be treated with antibiotics. Smart countries like the Nethrlands have already adapted the policy to tell the patients to wait for two days (or something, can't remember) before taking any antibiotics, which slows down the development of resistent bacteria considerably, whereas in dumb countries like Finland and the USA (no idea about what Canada does though) they still drown you in drugs as soon as you utter the word "ear".

I think Canada still has the "throw-antibiotics-at-it" policy when it comes to ear infections. I wouldn't know, mind you, not having had one in about twenty-three years.

I had ear infections every ten days as a child, once the antibiotics would run out. It's interesting to know that my apathy in this case was probably a good thing. ;)

mostly I think the KILL IT NOW approach to ear infections is the amount of screaming a child or person will utter while in the throes of the feeling of a giant spike being hammered into your head.

Yeah. I spent a lot of last week gritting my teeth and swearing. :P
