It's that "ask me five questions and I'll ask you five questions" thing. You know the drill.

1. What made you think you could play drums in a band if you had never played the before? (And that shouldn't sound insulting at all, but I can't find a better way to phrase it. I really am impressed by the confidence that took.)

I've always been obsessed with drums, since I was a kid. Or, rather, since I read Who Is Bugs Potter? by Gordon Korman. I love that author. It's a CanLit thing. I adored his books. Re-read them constantly as a kid and probably still would if they weren't somewhere in storage.

I have said elsewhere that I am the Flute Guy. I identified right away with the side-kick who mostly stays in the background, but without whom the star would not be a star. The one who keeps both feet on the ground, and is staunchly loyal. I am the foil. The Sancho Panza to someone's Don Quixote.

The problem is that I always wanted to be Bugs Potter. I didn't want to be the Flute Guy. I wanted to be the focus, for a very long time. Of course, I discovered at some point that once the focus is on me, I squirm like a worm on a hook. I hate having people watch me. So, I learned to accept and even revel in being the Flute Guy. The Flute Guy is important, even vital to the story.

I was very happy in my role as Fifth Business. But then, some girls decided to form a band, and they had no drummer. And there and then, I saw my chance.

This is my shot at being Bugs Potter. :)

2. Is there any chance you would move brunch to a better restaurant, or is there a reason you like that place that hasn't occured to me in my limited exposure to it?

No, there's no reason I like that place in particular. The food isn't great, and the quality of service varies. However, it is close to about 80% of the people who attend brunch. Also, most people don't check my LJ every week, and just go there assuming that brunch will be taking place there.

If I had my way, brunch would be at a Chez Cora, which has much better food. This was my original idea, but it was nixed as being too expensive an option.

3. Why Phnee? Why Mouseme?

First off, it's "Mousme," not "Mouseme."

"Mousme" is a pet name my father has for me. He claims it's the French spelling of an Arabic word meaning "little girl." I've always liked it, and I see no reason to disbelieve him, as the man speaks about nine languages.

When it came time to change my username on LJ (my original username was a mistake due to my misreading the sign-up form), I made a poll, and there were several very good suggestions. However, I remembered the old pet name, and decided to go with that instead.

"Phnee" is a nickname that evolved after I pitched a fit at [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave for calling me "Daph." It's a pet peeve. I hate it when people shorten my name to the first syllable. It strikes me as mental laziness, and besides, it's ugly.

After the fit had been pitched, [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave made it his goal in life to find a nickname that fit me. No one to date had ever been able to find one that would stick. It took about two and a half years, but he finally came up with "Phnee," which is the last syllable of my name (in English, anyway), and somehow I didn't mind the shortening. For one, there was actual effort put into the name.

It also fits, and is reasonably easy to pronounce. I've been going by Phnee to many of my friends for about three years now.

4. Which do you prefer in a friend, honesty or kindness? (neither to extremes, just which would you prefer them to tend towards)

Kindness, absolutely. Honesty has its place, but I'd rather have reassurance and hot chocolate and some nice white lies rather than the stark truth, at least until I'm ready to hear it. Sometimes a lie at the right time is better than the truth at the wrong time.

5. In the federal election we all know is coming in the next year, which party will you most likely vote for?

Bleah. I vote NDP out of principle, because they're the only vaguely-reasonable leftist party we have in Canada. Sadly, they're not very effective. Also, if I thought the NDP had any chance of winning in my ridings, I might not vote for them, because all the candidates in Quebec are about twelve years old and have the mental powers of a twenty-four-hour gnat.

I view my vote as a statement of principle rather than a gesture that will have any meaningful impact on the election. I have always lived in ridings that were staunchly Liberal or Conservative, so my vote has never made much of a difference.

If I thought it would do any good, I'd spoil my ballot. There is no good choice.

Hey, you may want to go read my good friend [livejournal.com profile] forthright's last three posts on the upcoming election and the current political situation in Canada. That pretty much sums up what I'm thinking these days, in much more eloquent terms than I could ever manage.

Well, "Aphn" was right out :)

Of course. And given that unlike poor [livejournal.com profile] terheyt didn't know what she was getting into (whereas you do) when she asked for a fishing story, I'll volunteer :).

Okay. I certainly do know what I'm getting into if I ask for a fish story. Here goes:

1- What kind of fishing have you not done yet that you're dying to try out? Why?

2- Is there a book that you read which changed your outlook on life permanently? Elaborate as much as you'd like, and since I hate these questions for limiting me, feel free to discuss more than one book if you want.

3- How has the way you view yourself changed in the past year?

4- Okay, I want a fish story. Not a "this was the biggest/coolest fish EVAR!1!!1" kind of story, but a story which explains why fishing is still great even when it's not. ;) Like that t-shirt I saw once: "Fishing is like sex: when it's good it's really good, and when it's bad, it's still pretty good."

5- You are well-known for lusting after widgets. Is there a particular widget you're lusting after these days? An important one, that is. What's the appeal of this one?
