Shepherd's pie
Mar. 17th, 2005 09:54 pmMore than ever I wish LJ would succumb to pressure from the masses and allow more icons, so I could make an icon to the glory of food.
I made a kick-ass shepherd's pie tonight (with corn, thankyouverymuch), and am now a happy camper. I also bought plums, so I won't die of scurvy anytime soon.
Huzzah!
I'm slowly but surely getting addicted to Diet Dr. Pepper. I know. Shut up.
I love my new kitchen. My new kitchen rocks like a rocking thing. I can cook in it without fearing for my health or my life! No battles to the death with Evil Weevils O' Doom!
I can also do my dishes without twisting my spine out of alignment for the first time in nearly three years. This is a Good Thing™.
I've gotten back into the habit of making tea every morning. Tea and oatmeal and the occasional croissant. Ten days ago there were hot cross buns. Bliss.
Work is good. Bizarre, but okay. It's periods of not-quite-boredom interspersed with periods of frenetic activity, neither of which are overly stressful.
The one "negative" thus far is the Head!Man. He's very nice, but he's A) Italian with an accent, and B) tends to mumble things at me while running out the door (or in the door, or while going by my desk going somewhere else). This is highly unproductive, since it means I can't watch his mouth when he talks, and thus only catch about one-third of what he's saying, if I'm lucky.
Despite my telling him a few times that he has to slow down and not toss instructions over his shoulder so I can hear him, he won't. I can understand why: he's in a hurry, and because I'm able to carry on a conversation with most people in the office, it doesn't really sink in that I'm hard of hearing. So he won't make accommodations he doesn't feel are necessary. Besides, he's busy and always on the go.
If I do end up staying permanently, I'll have to impress it more firmly upon him that he at the very least needs to enunciate and speak up with me.
I spent four days organising a manager's computer files, at her request, following her instructions. Now she complains she can't find anything. I'd be annoyed, except it's funny. Maybe next time she'll do her own damned filing.
Also, I must find a way to impress upon her that, although I will gladly type up her correspondence, hieroglyphs and CIA code are not my specialties. I can't read her squiggles, abbreviations, and lengthy letters written in the margins of other letters, using some of the text of the original letter by judiciously placing arrows to the right words. Well, I can read it all, but probably not in the order she intends. She's also a formatting freak, seeing misalignments where there are none. I swear. I took a ruler and checked, just to make sure I wasn't insane.
However, these are all minor glitches in the grand scheme of things.
I have a green plastic shot glass with four-leaf-clovers on it, as loot from the Luau. Sadly I have nothing to put in it right now, but I'm thinking very seriously of acquiring that big-ass bottle of Bailey's I was talking about before.
Am in love with Neil Gaiman. Also, I read too fast. It's costing me a damned fortune in books.

Date: 2005-03-18 03:26 am (UTC)Neverwhere is the best Neil Gaimen book ever (except for Good Omens). I think I have it here somewhere and I have a copy of Coraline that I borrowed from my boss. You're welcome to read both. I also have a collection of his short fiction.
Another writed you'd probably like (although the the subjects are totally different) is Judith Tarr.
You're welcome to fill your glass from my bottle as often as you like btw.

Date: 2005-03-18 04:48 pm (UTC)Corn is good. Not sure why someone might object to that.
*laughs* She should be careful what she asks for... she just might get it. :D
As are far too many of the single female population of the English-reading part of the WORLD.
