Impressionist Art
Nov. 11th, 2004 08:05 amThis is going to be short, since I have to get to work soon.
It occurred to me, sometime late last night, that I don't really have clear pictures in my head when I write, as many people claim they do. On the other hand, I don't only have words in mind either. This is very much how I read, too.
Something about my creative process looks a lot like an impressionist painting, especially when it's in movement. The more dynamic the scene, the more blurred the edges, the more indistinct the faces.
If I stop and concentrate hard enough, sometimes my mental camera will let me focus on a detail that will become as sharp as though it were on film, but it's never anything larger than part of a face, an area roughly the size of my hand.
Otherwise, my stories take on a hazy, amorphous form inside my head, meandering along as pointillism and impressionism, colourful splotches on my mental canvas that somehow coalesce into narrative once conveyed to paper.
Just something I wanted to get down in writing. I'm not going to touch on the other senses, because that would take way too long.
