Yet another embarrassing moment for Phnee
Feb. 5th, 2004 02:32 pmSo I decided to phone
djs_specs last night, having calculated the time difference and figuring that, even if she wasn't home, I wasn't calling at an ungodly hour and waking her up and destroying her day. I thought I could leave her a message or something.
The problem was, when I had spoken to her and taken down her phone number, she was visiting with her parents, and thus not at her usual residence. I hadn't taken note of this at the time, and thought this was her regular home number. I am never going to live this down, but this is mostly how the conversation went: (names have been omitted to protect the innocent)
Me: *dials number*
*ring ring ring*
Unidentified male voice: Hello?
Me: *flustered because it's clearly not
djs_specs* Oh, um, I'm sorry, I think I must have the wrong number, but... is
djs_specs there?
Unidentified male:
djs_specs L------?
Me: *even more flustered because I don't actually know
djs_specs's last name* Err... I think so...
djs_specs's Dad: You're out of luck, because she doesn't live here anymore. This is her dad. She lives in Toowoomba, love. You'll have to call her there.
Me: *dying of embarrassment* Oh, right, of course. I'm terribly sorry. Thankyousomuchgoodbye.
djs_specs's Dad: No problem, love. Good bye.
Me: *hangs up and dies*
So, yes. Mortified!Phnee here. Not too mortified to put it in my LJ for your general entertainment, mind you, but yes, mortified.
This is why I hate the phone. I hate making outgoing calls the most, because I always end up making an ass of myself.
djs_specs's father must wonder who the stammering Yankee nutcase was, because I was too humiliated to think of giving him my name or asking him for
djs_specs's number in Toowoomba. All I could think of was how quickly to get off the line.
Yes, I'm a shining example of cool poise under pressure. :P
You may now point and mock. ;)

Date: 2004-02-05 12:02 pm (UTC)He was coming to visit me from Germany, and his plane was delayed. I was waiting for him, had no idea what he looked like, no idea what his last name was, etc. I ended up waiting in the airport for 4 hours, thinking I had missed him the whole time!

Date: 2004-02-05 02:57 pm (UTC)See why 99.9 percent of the time I have a dreaded horror of the phone? Stuff like that happens to me too...
Re:
Date: 2004-02-05 03:15 pm (UTC)I avoid phones as much as possible, but decided to make an exception this time as the situation seemed to warrant it.
Calling Australia is not as simple as it would seem, however. :P

I'm back on my own computer, btw. I sorted out all the hooking myself back up to the internet stuff this morning (well, night time for you, I suppose), and I'm back in business!
I'm busily downloading all the instant messengers that got wiped off my memory before. ;)
