In other words, I saw Kill Bill: Vol. 1 last night with [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave after we met the NaNoWriMo crowd. The NaNo people are very very cool. I'm looking forward to getting to know the Dread Emily Horner better, as she not only games, she likes the same type of movies as me (and she too seems enthused at the idea of going to Underworld to see Kate Beckinsale in leather).

There were about eleven or twelve of us there, of whom I knew four. Many many jokes were made, anecdotes exchanged, the usual stuff when a large group of geeks convenes anywhere. Was much fun. :)

Dragged the Dread Emily Horner with us to see Kill Bill. Met RC and 'Mu who were coming out of said movie, and chatted with them before heading in ourselves, as we hadn't seen them in a while (except TDEH, who had never met either of them before). Was well worth the $10. Unfortunately we got in very late, thanks to our earlier chit-chat, and we ended up in the front row at the Paramount, which for those of you who don't know it means that we were right at the base of a giant screen, and thus spent the entire movie barely being able to see the top of the screen and seeing everything and everyone slightly deformed because the screen is curved. Nonetheless, it didn't mar my enjoyment of the movie, for once. :)

The movie rocked. Granted, I've never seen any other Tarantino films —yet. (Please keep all rotten fruit and vegetables and other projectiles to yourselves, please).

Uma Thurman still has some acting issues, but they were negligible since this wasn't exactly a film based on acting talent. She fills out a jumpsuit nicely, I must say. *rrowr* Also, who would have thought Uma Thurman would be responsible for one of the best swordfighting scenes in western cinema? Cognitive dissonance, anyone? But it worked.

Loved the characters. One-dimensional, crazy, demented, believable in a weird way. Loved the one-eyed assassin.

The dialogue kept me in stitches.

There were fountains of blood, even in the anime sequence. Yes, there was an anime sequence. Oh. My. God. Fountains. No attempt at realism. Even if all of those people (and there were close to fifty if not more who spurted blood all over the set at one point or another) had been hypertensive, there was no attempt to show aortic spurting or whatever. Just jets of blood that went on forever. God Almighty was it gory! But fun. :D

My one quibble: The Bride (played by Uma Thurman), wakes up from a coma and immediately knows it's been four years. How the f*ck is that possible? Not that the movie was in any way realistic. I could never quite tell whether some parts were supposed to be taken seriously or not, but I think that was part of the point. You're just not sure.

There was a lovely hommage to The Untouchables and of course Tarantino ripped off Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but he did it with a fair amount of subtlety, as it was a secondary character who did the flying around, extremely briefly. He ripped off a number of movies, and each time it was subtle, unexpected, and in a very original manner. Good stuff.

I want the soundtrack.

I want a yellow four-by-four with flames that says "Pussy Wagon" in poofy pink letters on the back.
