So last night's throwing up/upset stomach turned into a fever this morning, as previously mentioned. Poor Bean didn't want to eat much apart from a few bites of apple sauce, and refused most drinks as well. The fever climbed over the course of the morning, at which point he began to complain loudly that his neck hurt a lot. Well, kid + fever + neck pain was something we weren't prepared to take a chance on, so off we went to the Children's Hospital. [livejournal.com profile] pdaughter took Bean in her car, and I followed in mine, so that I could be free to come and go as needed in case we were at the the hospital for a long time. Last year when Bean had pneumonia and an infection in both ears we ended up there for the entire afternoon and evening right up until nearly midnight. In light of that, we figured we shouldn't take the chance and take both cars. Luckily for me [livejournal.com profile] sandman7 generously let me park in his driveway for the duration, so we didn't have to pay a fortune in parking fees.

I went off to get snacks and drinks for us, since I'd had a bowl of cereal and [livejournal.com profile] pdaughter hadn't had anything to eat yet, while she drove Bean directly to the Children's. It being Easter Sunday everything was closed except for Pharmaprix (Shopper's Drug Mart for those outside Quebec), but that was enough to find a sufficient amount of sandwiches and snacks to keep us going if necessary. I caught up with [livejournal.com profile] pdaughter and Bean as they were going through registration, and we were told to await the triage nurse in the waiting room. I have to say, the waiting room at the Children's is very, very nice. It has lots of different things to keep kids' attention, and had a very cosy reading corner, which is where we sat.

We were called to triage relatively quickly, where the nurse was absolutely lovely with us. She took Bean's blood pressure and temperature, asked all the relevant questions, and then promised him an "Easter present" if he took Advil without protest, which he did. When she went out to get the present, she took me aside and whispered: "What kind of present would he like?" To which I, of course, answered: "Whichever one you have that's for girls." She laughed and picked out a present bag for girls as well as a Kinder egg. We ended up with a flower stamp, some butterfly stickers, a spinning top and a slinky shaped like a star. They were all a big hit. Pictured above is the star-shaped slinky.

The wait for the doctor was slightly longer. We were eventually directed to Corridor B, where the nurse greeted us with a triple take. Since Bean was wearing his usual outfit of skirt and lots of pink, and his hair is quite long, she was having trouble reconciling the "male" on his chart with what she was seeing. It took both me and [livejournal.com profile] pdaughter repeating several times "No, this is [Bean]. Yes, he's a boy," before she eventually figured it out. We waited in the exam room for quite a while after that. Bean was disappointed at the lack of a colouring table in the exam room, a sentiment which was echoed later on by the little boy in the adjoining exam room, which made me laugh. Kids have their priorities straight.

Bean settled in [livejournal.com profile] pdaughter's lap and sat very quietly, which in and of itself told us that he really wasn't feeling well. You can tell when Bean is sick, it's the only time he's ever really quiet and still. Those of you who have met him will know exactly what I'm talking about. ;) He amused himself by playing a "game" on his invisible phone (pictured below).

We were first seen by a charming medical student, who was so intent on getting things right/her exam done that she forgot to introduce herself and only remembered after the exam and got very flustered. She was adorable and very good with Bean, though she too thought he was a girl at first. She had a hard time examining him, since even when he's sick he won't really sit still so that the medical professionals can look at his ears and throat, but she managed well enough. She then explained that she was going to report her findings to the doctor and he would come back to see for himself.

By then Bean was already rallying a bit, probably due to the Advil kicking in, and he was moving his head much more easily and no longer spontaneously complaining of neck pain, but he was still lethargic and didn't want to do much. He conked out in [livejournal.com profile] pdaughter's lap while we were waiting.

Unfortunately, when the doctor came around Bean was still fast asleep, and was very upset at being awoken to bright lights and tongue depressors. He wailed and fussed and flailed so much that the doctor, a lovely older gentleman, gave us a rueful look and suggested he come back in fifteen minutes once Bean had properly woken up and was more settled. Bean continued to fuss for a while after that, then once he was calm again requested food, which was a very good sign. We all had a quick lunch of the sandwiches I'd bought earlier, and Bean had some applesauce and a graham cracker as well, though he still refused to have anything to do with the water bottle we'd brought. (He was happy to drink from the water fountain later, though!)

The doctor saw him again, and came to the conclusion we'd all arrived at in the meantime, that it was probably just a virus and that there was no real cause for concern. Everyone reassured us that we'd done the right thing, given the neck pain, but in this case it was a false alarm. I'll take the win, in this particular case.

Bean settled(ish) on the sofa when we got home, at which point I went out to do what I had planned to do in the morning, namely start the yard cleanup for the spring. If the weather holds, I'll be doing some more tomorrow, too. It's been a very long, very cold winter, and the dog did not get walked all that much because of a combination of the weather and the fact that I was gone more than half the time. So he used the back yard to go out, because where else was he supposed to go?

Yeah. So. The yard was an ocean of poop. I have battled it down to what might be considered a small pond of poop in one corner that I can't get to yet because the snow isn't all melted and it's just too wet to get to. Blech. It wasn't as difficult to clean up as I feared, but the ground was still wet enough that it was something of a challenge.

I took the dog outside with me to stretch his legs, and he ended up playing for about two hours with the neighbours' much younger, much more exuberant Labrador, Démon. Don't let the name fool you, he's a sweetheart. So, all in all, the dog had a blast and got a lot of exercise, for which he was sorely overdue. He has now lapsed into a happy dog coma at my feet.

I hope the weather will be as clement tomorrow, because I'd really like to get back out there and get the yard in slightly better shape. There are a lot of leftover dead leaves, and I never got to the raised beds in time before the first snowfall last year. In short, there's a lot of cleanup left to do, and I'd like to get more of it done tomorrow. I could use the fresh air and sunlight these days, since I don't get much of it, and if I can get the yard properly cleaned it means that Bean will be able to get out there and play to his heart's content all summer long as well.

Bean has now been in bed for 20 minutes without so much as a peep. He started falling asleep in his mother's lap at least an hour ago, though he protested vociferously that it wasn't bedtime yet and that he didn't want to go to sleep, though in the same breath he declared that he was so tired. Apparently if you're tired, sleep is the last thing you want. News to me!

Still, he's had a very long day and was still running a low-grade fever, and he ended up going to bed without too much protest. [livejournal.com profile] pdaughter and I are going to try to catch up on a few episodes of The Following if all goes well.

Aw, poor Bean! I'm glad things turned out to be okay, but that doesn't sound fun at all. Neither does the ocean of poop!

Yeah, it wasn't fun at all. He's still sick today, and utterly miserable. He's refused to be out of his mother's lap all day, so I've been cleaning/organising around them.

I'm so glad it was just a virus! Hopefully he feels better soon.
