Poor Smudge finally crept out of hiding while I was gone for the weekend, and promptly tried to run away again as soon as I got home with the dog.

I caught him, though, and kept him first in the bedroom (where he peed on my bed in order to show me just how hard he was judging me for my life choices) and now in the spare room with the door closed to keep him separate from the dog without his having to hide in the basement ceiling.

Poor cat, he's a hot mess. He's been too afraid to come out and eat, so he's lost a ton of weight. Anyone know a good way to make an underweight cat gain weight again? I may try wet food, but I'm afraid it'll wreak havoc on his digestive system. Halp?

This has the same potential for digestive issues if the cat isn't used to wet food, but sick and finicky cats sometimes go for baby food (the chicken and beef and such varieties) which packs a lot of calories. Poor kitty.

Kitten food is a lot higher in calories that regular cat food, so that may help, and the "ultra-high-end extra-natural with lots of added amoni-acids" type foods that you can get at pet stores are often very high calorie, too (just had this discussion with my vet yesterday, about which food to get for Whiskey, who is lean to the point of skinny). The Kcal/cup should be marked somewhere on the bag of food near the feeding guidelines or the nutritional analysis, and something in the 400-500 Kcal/cup range is very high-cal for cat food.

could you try mixing the wet food with the dry food? that would probably alleviate the digestive issues and might get him to eat more.

I would totally try kitten food; we do this at the vet's sometimes with skinny stray cats that come in for adoption.

Aw poor Smudge!
Well I'm glad he's in the spare room instead of the basement!
