So I'm thinking of getting a space heater. This place doesn't heat all that efficiently, and the thermostat in the kitchen appears to have permanently given up the ghost.

Any recommendations from local folks? Horror stories of what to avoid?

Thanks! :)

I'm not local, but we use one of the portable oil-filled radiators for supplemental heat when needed... very happy with it. Nice even heat and silent.

I head my boat with an oil-filled (airworks) heater in the v-berth, and a blowy cafrano heater in the saloon. they've both survived a few winters now, and don't seem to be having any problems yet. For a while, I had a pair of black&decker heaters largely because I could generally expect them to fail before their warranty expired, ensuring that I could maintain a continuous stream of new heaters, but got tired of dealing with that period of time between a heater failing and my getting a replacement.

I have a small but efficient electric space heater that I'm not using. It's been in storage for a few years, but in a box and kept dry and damage free, it's yours if you want it.

It's yours :D I'll pull it out of storage tomorrow and give it a vacuuming and test run and then be in touch about the how of getting it to you.

I don't remember if the kitchen thermostat has a battery. Our current one here does, and dies when the battery dies, even though it's wired into the wall. Worth checking!

An oil-filled one is what I'm currently using in the rooms that still don't have heaters in them. It looks like a little radiator. I got it at reno-depot for about $60 and it heats nicely.

I also have a little square blower heater if I need an extra blast somewhere. I used to use it in my office while I was working until I was somewhat careless and had it too close to a bag of computer stuff I had just upgraded from, and the heater melted the bag and some of the computer stuff including a docking station and mouse. Yikes! So good heat, but loud and needs supervision.
