Firefox tells me I use that subject line a lot. Dunno what that says about me.

So the happy new external hard drive I got myself as a birthday present is already malfunctioning. COME ON!

It keeps "ejecting" itself, and now 90% of the time it doesn't register when I plug it in. Highly annoying, especially since I have a LOT of stuff on there, including new episodes of Supernatural

Bah, humbug.

I think that I ought to start looking into copying some of this stuff onto CDs or whatever. Trouble is, I have NO idea how to do that. :(

In related but less frustrating news, does anyone out there in LJ land know how I would go about recording an MP3 on my computer? I mean, a recording of my own voice. I'm thinking of a birthday present for my mother, and I'd love to be able to record something for her that I could either give her as a computer file or maybe burn to a disc, or something. I have no idea where to even begin, but I'd like to avoid the complication of a hand-held recorder which I would then have to somehow put onto the computer and... uh. Yeah.

Help?

Do you have GarageBand on your Mac? If not, I have the latest iLife suite. I can also lend you my mic, which should plug into your input. My Mini doesn't recognise it, but the Mini is super-stripped down and Macbooks tend to be smarter about stuff like that. If it doesn't work, I can lend you the Minidisc player that acts as a powered preamp and gets the mic to work; you just hit record on GarageBand and the Minidisc player and it records right to computer through the Minidisc, no two-step transferring thing.

I do have GarageBand. I poked at it, but can't seem to make it record stuff as an mp3. It insists on labelling everything ".band" which confuses me to no end.

If I ever have time off ever again, I will totally take you up on your offer. I may even eventually invest in something myself. :)

Thank you!

When it's recorded you need to export it to iTunes and open it as an mp3. Super easy; it's essentially just saving it and then opening it in a specific way in iTunes to listen to it, then saving it again. It took me an hour to figure it out. Now I am dangerous. :)

Gnarr.

I spent a while poking at iTunes, but the "test" recording I make doesn't seem to want to open. How did you manage it?

In GarageBand, click on "Share", and then "Send Song to iTunes". This saves it in the Library in an iTunes open-able format. Open iTunes, then "Open File", then find your file. It will play it in iTunes. You probably need to Save As then select mp3 at this point; I can't remember. I"m rushed at the moment, so I'll check again for you tomorrow or Monday.

Umm... I think the easiest way would be to make a voice post and then download it (I actually went back in [livejournal.com profile] bodhifox's journal to verify that this was correct - right click on the voice post link, save as and hey presto! A shiny new mp3 - at leas in IE...). Sounds like a phone call, but hey, it's simple.

Mmmm, if you don't figure out the whole CD recording file backup thing, let me know.
Maybe I can come up with something when you're here on Sunday? (After the shower I mean)

How odd that your external is already throwing tantrums. Out of curiosity what did you buy?

I will definitely take you up on that. I am a giant wuss when it comes to computer stuff. ;)

My external is La Cie, for what it's worth.

Alas that I can't come to the shower. I am really, really pissed about that.
