Music that brings tears to your eyes
Dec. 1st, 2009 02:05 amOkay, so if you're anything like me, there is at least ONE song out there that, if it doesn't make you cry, it at least makes you a little misty-eyed.
Mine is Leonard Cohen's beautiful adaptation of Garcia Lorca's poem, "Litte Viennese Waltz." It makes me think of rainy days in Paris, of hiding in dusty attics, of losing myself in my father's old books, and the nostalgia just about breaks my heart.
(Okay, there are others, because I am a SAPPY WUSS, but this is the one that never fails.)
"Take This Waltz"
Okay, flist. Your turn. Spill. What song tugs at your heartstrings?

Date: 2009-12-01 07:24 am (UTC)Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. I lost a baby (still born son) just about a year after Eric Clapton lost his son. That song is probably worse because I know it's about his son.

Date: 2009-12-01 07:32 am (UTC)But, a couple that never fail are Def Leppard's "Gods Of War" (especially the live version from "In The Round, In Your Face" - Steve Clark's guitar solo is sheer heartbreaking brilliance to me, as is the near-begging "stop, stop fighting for the gods of war, what the hell we fightin' for?" that's basically the last line of the song), and Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town". I know that seems an odd choice, but when you really listen to the lyrics, it's very bittersweet, and it's Clint's fault I get choked up when I hear it, because before deployment #1, he was doing the standard planning for "if I don't come back, here's how I want my memorial service"...he was tossing around music ideas, some of them sarcastic, trying to lighten the mood (he actually threatened to come back and haunt me if "My Heart Will Go On" was played - it's sort of a joke going back to a random sing-along at aviation camp, when we met), and some of them serious - Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" (which also chokes me up now) and "The Boys Are Back In Town" were two that he decided were serious choices. And now, the local classic rock stations seem to be on a Thin Lizzy kick of late...

Forget crying---were talking out and out sobbing for most of these. (Even compiling this list has got me all choked up.) I know there’s a ton more, but I’m blanking right now, and I need to get back to the endless marking . . . which also makes me want to cry, though for totally different reasons.

Date: 2009-12-01 01:50 pm (UTC)"No Telling," Linda Thompson (if I were going to limit myself to just one answer, this would be it, big time)
"When Ye Go Away," The Waterboys
"When I Was a Boy," Dar Williams
"Falling Slowly," Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova
There are many others, but I'm coming up blank at the moment.
