My work is cutting off a huge part of our internet access starting October 1st. Likely I won't be able to see LJ at all anymore, or any of my favourite blogs.

WOE!

Yes, I know. I'm supposed to work while I'm at work, but since a lot of it is "hurry up and wait" work, I really relied on the internet for my sanity.

*sigh*

I will live, but it just won't be the same.

Would management frown on the use of a Blackberry with wireless broadband?

Oh, very much so. All sorts of security breaches are possible with that. We're not even allowed cell phone within the confines of the OCC.

See, this is crazy. We are allowed to use our cell phones and such to get on the internet and do everything but make phone calls, but we aren't supposed to be playing around on the internet.

Seriously, how is the Blackberry on the internet more of a breach of security than the regular internet? (The reasoning for our rules is because of viruses and too much distraction. Not that they're ever consistent about that stuff. We aren't allowed to bring in portable DVD players to watch movies, but we can watch the televisions that they provide. I rarely do, because I really do get very distracted by the television.)

Any explanation why they're doing this? Is staff productivity actually measurably suffering because of internet usage? Would it really genuinely suffer less if staff were denied this outlet?

I think they're doing it for "security" purposes rather than for reasons of productivity.

Difficult one to dodge, I suppose. I know some games companies are very paranoid like that too, but obviously their staff do need web access so they have two networks running in parallel and two PCs on every desk, one machine connected to the outside world, the other connected to the work servers.

When we moved to this new building, we suddenly had internet access (we weren't able to get on the internet at the old building.) I haven't even attempted to get on LJ at work, though. We aren't really allowed on, even though most of the supervisors get on and turn a blind eye to people being on the internet. We are allowed to use it to Google locations of phase 2 cell phones, though, which is nice because I do not understand the mapping system that they connected it to.

I will pop on the internet to look things up, but really don't use it to pass the time. I use magazines, puzzles, and books for that. Besides, I really don't want my work to know I have an LJ.
