Privilege Quiz
Bold the items that are true...

1. Father went to college
2. Father finished college
3. Mother went to college
4. Mother finished college (Actually, she has a BFA, but I think that counts for this quiz)
5. Have any relative who is an attorney, physician, or professor
6. Were the same or higher class than your high school teachers
7. Had more than 50 books in your childhood home
8. Had more than 500 books in your childhood home (My father collects books: at the last count, we had 12,000)
9. Were read children's books by a parent
10. Had lessons of any kind before you turned 18
11. Had more than two kinds of lessons before you turned 18
12. The people in the media who dress and talk like me are portrayed positively
13. Had a credit card with your name on it before you turned 18 (No, but this was an ethical choice rather than a financial one)
14. Your parents (or a trust) paid for the majority of your college costs (They could have, but I had a scholarship)
15. Your parents (or a trust) paid for all of your college costs (No, not all of it. I paid for my own books, but again, this was a choice not a necessity)
16. Went to a private high school
17. Went to summer camp
18. Had a private tutor before you turned 18 (Once, to help the transition from English to French school)
19. Family vacations involved staying at hotels
20. Your clothing was all bought new before you turned 18 (Apart from hand-me-downs from friends)
21. Your parents bought you a car that was not a hand-me-down from them (No, we were a one-car family)
22. There was original art in your house when you were a child
23. Had a phone in your room before you turned 18 (No, but I could have. Ethics again)
24. You and your family lived in a single family house
25. Your parent(s) owned their own house or apartment before you left home
26. You had your own room as a child
27. Participated in an SAT/ACT prep course (No, because Canada doesn't really have those)
28. Had your own TV in your room in High School (Again, an ethical rather than financial choice: my parents didn't think I should have one, and I was inclined to agree)
29. Owned [an investment] in High School or College (My parents and I are woefully ignorant about that sort of thing. Stock markets happen to other people)
30. Flew anywhere on a commercial airline before you turned 16
31. Went on a cruise with your family (No, but we could have. My parents think cruises are tacky)
32. Went on more than one cruise with your family (see above)
33. Your parents took you to museums and art galleries as you grew up
34. You were unaware of how much heating bills were for your family

Yep, I am a privileged white girl from not-quite Westmount. Ask the right questions, and it shows. :P

Ditto for me on everything except #18 (though I'm not exactly sure what #6 is supposed to mean), and I'm not absolutely sure about #25, but I think it's true. Add #14.

34. Heating was filling up the tank with 5 gallon cans of #2 or burning wood in the double oil drum wood stove in the basement.

What the hell does #6 mean?

I can still bold 19 of them.

This quiz is ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure it assumes that your teachers were middle-class, and is asking if you were middle-class or wealthier. *shrug*

That quiz doesn't work for people as antique as me.

E.g., they hadn't started giving prep courses for SATs when I was in school. 800 was considered virtually impossible.

Credit card? Hardly any adults had them ;)

I think there were two or three kids in my 3,000 student high school who had a phone in their room. I guess we were "higher economic class" than the teachers. Most of the teachers couldn't afford to live in our neighbourhood.

#12 falls-down with my accent. Anyone who talks like me is automatically evil.
