It's nearly 07:00 and it's still dark out. I thought the longest night had already passed!

Anyway, I am up, and have been for about an hour. I've been getting up ridiculously early these past few days, mostly as a result of getting tired early and crashing out accordingly. I suppose it's not a bad system, except for the fact that I'm probably missing a lot of friends who come online late at night.

I watched a couple of episodes of the first season of the X-Files last night, which [livejournal.com profile] tcaptain lent to me a couple of weeks ago. Now that I've finished Season 2 of Stargate: Atlantis, I figured I can concentrate on this.

You know what? X-Files stands the test of time pretty well so far. It doesn't feel dated, probably because it doesn't try to be timeless: it's very much set in the early nineties and makes no apologies for it. I am really impressed with how scary it is. Now, I'll admit I am a wuss about these things, but watching it all alone, I was absolutely anxious when things started to go wrong. The absence of cell phones or any sophisticated technology other than the occasional computer adds to the drama rather than detracts from it. This was when cell phones were just starting out, so they weren't an automatic accessory for our favourite FBI agents.

It's also been refreshing to revisit Baby!Scully, who is really cute and not horrifically thin, and also to see how cute and unjaded Mulder is. He's even snarky with the people who call him Spooky, and is a LOT more antagonistic with people than I remember from later seasons. He's passionate about what he believes in, and he alienates colleagues and witnesses alike in his crusade for truth. Together he and Scully make for a really interesting and novel team dynamic, which is obviously what made this show successful to begin with.

I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the season.

Erf you're making me want to go back and watch X-Files now too! :) I agree about the series not appearing dated etc., I wonder if that was intentional or just luck on the part of the director?

We were watching it as a family with Th'Boy for awhile and I agree-- it holds up pretty well. We're still in season one after nearly two years.

Ahhhhh... the good old days of TV. I remember having X-files get-togethers to watch the new eps. We used to do it with Buffy too.

Funnily enough last night I watched Fight the Future (the first X-Files movie), and got all nostalgic about the show. It was one of the first shows I ever scheduled my life around, rushing home on Friday nights to watch it at midnight (as it was deemed too intense and scary for prime-time). The first three seasons were great - moody, atmospheric, intense. Then they started believing their own hype and wound up moving to LA and, well, the show jumped the shark. But for a time it was incredible.

Bwahahaha, I love "when I panic, I make this face" and the episode where Mulder and Scully go undercover as a married couple in that gated community with the wacko homeowner's association. I think I have it on tape somewhere...now I want to watch it! lol
