Usually they're great about sending things so you get them within a couple days. You might have bought something that ships in a 1 to two weeks by accident? I don't always check the availability of each item when I buy something. It should have been on the confirmation page though, so that's probably not it...
Often the order tracking is completely on crack, too. I have definitely ordered things that were in stock, that shipped almost immediately, and it's still told me they were going to be several weeks in transit. This has rarely if every actually been true - usually the things arrive about when I would expect any package going through the regular mail system to arrive, i.e within 3-5 days or so.
I think they bump out the shipping estimates during the Christmas season, because the post offices get overwhelmed as well. That way, when things arrive in less time (a la the Scotty theorem), Amazon looks like a genius.
I'm thinking you may have ordered something that was marked 1-2 weeks before shipping, which means they don't have it on hand and need to get in before sending your whole order out.
