A thousand and one thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sultrysong who not only has bailed me out by taking poor pidgy to the SPCA to be put out of his (her?) misery, but also was kind enough to drive me home in the icky weather.

Hurray for fantastic friends!

Needless to say, my coworkers mocked me mercilessly for being a totally mushy-hearted softie. The price I pay for not being able to walk away from an animal in distress.

*sigh*

All is well that ends well. Hurray!

Tomorrow is a busy day. I'm very glad I don't have to get out to the SPCA and back on top of it all.

I hope the birdie makes it, or goes quickly to birdie heaven.

The very same thing happened to me a few years ago with a baby squirrel. I got made fun of, but the baby lived. :)

Yeah, I think pidgy will have to make do with a swift and painless way to go. He (she?) was in pretty bad shape when I found him: couldn't fly, couldn't even hold himself right side up and kept flopping over onto his back. I'm not holding out much hope, and besides, I doubt the SPCA will be willing to waste veterinary resources on what is commonly considered vermin. :(

Still, better to have a painless death than to die alone on a sidewalk, no?

Squirrels and pigeons are food. You wouldn't worry about a baby bologna, would you?

"Squirrels and pigeons are food."

Not to everyone, apparently.

Your logic is flawed. Bologna, per se, is not an animal. It is a part of an animal. Thus, it can never take on baby form. :)

Besides, this pigeon was an adult, as far as I can tell. It's not so much the food/not food aspect of the thing, as it is about not letting another creature suffer. If I'm going to treat something as food, I want to kill it swiftly and mercifully, not watch as it agonizes on a sidewalk downtown.

I'd also hesitate to eat something found on the street, even delicious bologna. Maybe that's just me.

As someone who has rescued (or attempted to rescue) pigeons, squirrels, mice, bats, and even a frog, I think you did the right thing.

Thanks. :)

I couldn't leave the poor thing to agonize on the sidewalk in the freezing rain. It was just too pathetic.

Your compassion serves you well. Bury your feelings deep down, Phnee. They do you credit.
But they could be made to serve the people making fun of you.

Serve them how? Unless they're hoarding a flock of injured pigeons in their basements... ;)
