After one glorious, heady evening of wireless internet, my connections are all borked. I just spent an hour and a half on the phone with Sympatico's tech support, and they got my regular connection up and running again. I am displeased.

I have the 1-800 number for the company that made my router (LinkSys, which the guy told me was good, but perhaps he lied in order to make his sale), and as soon as I've recovered from the last conversation with customer service, I'll be calling them to figure out what the hell is wrong with my router.

I tried the signal right in the living room (right before everything went to hell), and even then nothing loaded, so something must have gone horribly wrong with the wireless connection overnight. Why would it work last night and not this morning? God only knows.

Now I have to go about unpacking and setting up bookcases and CD racks and towel racks. I wish I hadn't had to spend all morning on this nonsense. :P

Quite sure. All the other networks are locked now that [livejournal.com profile] ai731's wireless router is gone.

I was clearly on my network (the one I named Clytemnestra) with my own password. It worked this morning, except that none of my internet pages would load: email and messengers worked fine, it just seemed as though my connection speed was snail-like.

My range expanders were Linksys. My dad and I are going to take them out back and shoot them as soon as we get a free moment. My dad, who suffered them most from them, gets first shot.

In my experience, their range expanders have one good feature, and that they'll fit into a clay pigeon launcher.

That's so weird - we've had excellent luck with LinkSys, and none at all with DLink or the other brands. Did he have you power-cycle it?

Unplug it (from the power, not the modem) for a few seconds (ten, if you're feeling anal; two or three is usually sufficient) and plug it back in. Watch all the little lights come back on, and you should be good to go.

Have you reset the router? It's a fairly common problem with wireless systems, that sometimes you need to unplug it from the power source for a minute and then plug it back in to make it pick up again. Some days ours does it frequently, others not so much. At the moment, it's probably been at least a week since I've had to reset, though I can remember occassions where it needed a reset several times in one day.

It's worth a shot, at least, and hopefully it'll help.

It's got nothing to do with sucking - it's technology. Sometimes it needs to be unplugged and/or reset. 'Tis the times. Ours generally needs a reset once a month or so.

Could there be interference from the neighborhood?

I had to replace my old router last month because between all the cordless phones, and the bazillion wireless networks, my poor router could no longer reach my bedroom with a signal (and that's only 15-20 feet away!)...it didn't help that there's one or two morons out there who seem to be switching their channels on an hourly basis.

After much consulting and experimenting I was forced to buy a new, more powerful router...now all is fine...

1) check the channel your router is broadcasting on (1 to 11 I think) and change it, see if that helps. Usually it does.

2) how many wireless networks are there?

3) does it seem to bork when you talk on the phone? (cordless)

2) There are about seven active networks around here, including mine.

7 active networks is a fair bit...but not unmanageable.
It might really be only a channel issue (Interference).

In your router documentation there should be instructions on where to change the channel. It's USUALLY not very complicated...basically surf the admin webpage for your router, find the setting, change it and let it cycle itself.
