Me: "So, yeah, I think the first time I ever came across the concept of homosexuality was when I was a pre-adolescent. I remember it being on one of the BBC programs I used to watch with my parents, probably Masterpiece Theatre or maybe Mystery."

Her: "You watched Masterpiece Theatre?"

Me: "Yeah. Every Sunday with my parents. Right after Nature, and Murder, She Wrote."

Her: *laughing* "Of course you did. That explains a lot."

Me: *laughing in spite of myself* "Whaaaat?"

Her: *shaking head* "Masterpiece Theatre..."

She's vowed to tease me about it for as long as she can get away with it. :)

Come again?

Wuh . . ?

Am I missing something?

I also watched Masterpiece Theatre every week. Mystery, too. So did Jeff. So what?

Seriously, I don't get what is so funny about that.

It's not that it's funny in and of itself. It's just a very good illustration of my background and upbringing, and in a way explains why I talk and behave the way I do.

As she put it later in the conversation: "Do you know what my parents used to watch with me? 'Solid Gold'."

I think she was more amused by the contrast than by the idea of the show. :)

alright, so I got both worlds ... Murder, She Wrote was a ritual in my house as long as it aired, Mystery Theatre still drags people from far corners of the house, and we all watched Solid Gold (in fact I wanted to be a teacher during the day and a Solid Gold dancer at night when I grew up).

I'd never even heard of Solid Gold until Tuesday. :)

So, a she with whom to tete-a-tete?* What happened while I was out?

ê Aha!

But I confess I didn't even know which little mark to make.

I've been transcribing Lithuanian lately (gravestone inscriptions) and I'm at the point where all wiggly doodads leave me flummoxed.

I'm so provincial! Thanks for the bail-out. :)

Yay! You recognize it!

You're the first person to do so, despite me giving the artist credit.

I think she's great. :) :)

I'm still being coy about this one. Let's just say it looks like good things may be on the horizon...

It's good to be coy, and in honor of that sentiment, I will tell you my one and only lesbian joke. Highlight the white space for the answer.

What do you call two lesbians and a U-Haul?

A second date.

Ain't it the truth? Good luck!

...

Why would she find that funny? Or in any way unusual?

I don't get it. O:-/

Also: maybe it was Masterpiece Theatre's series on the life of Lady Astor. I seem to remember her son gets caught doing that "love that dare not speak its name" thing; but of course he gets off (of the charge, I mean — ahem!) because of who his parents are.

Could be. I seem to recall it being set in the nineteenth-century (which makes me think it may have been Mystery rather than Masterpiece Theatre), but not much more than that. Certainly it didn't leave a very strong impression.

It turns out not everyone was raised on this stuff. Who knew? ;)

Maybe Star Quality: Noel Coward Stories.

Here's the program history by year:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/archive/programs.html

I was a PBS kid, and I don't mean Sesame Street. From watching Alastair Cook and that Connections guy down to Monty Python and 'Allo, 'allo! Look how I turned out.
