I've been bad about posting here, for the same reasons as usual. So much stuff happens IRL that I don't have the energy left over to post when it happens, and then afterward there's so much of it to catch up on that I get overwhelmed. I'm going to try to do better. A few years ago I did well when I challenged myself to post once a day to LJ for a year, regardless of how much or how little had happened that day, so I may try that again in the New Year. You've been warned. ;)

I don't know what I've posted the last few times. I should go back and check, but I probably won't for now. The dog training classes are over, and I haven't been out running in a bit because I find running in over a foot of snow really hard on my ankles and back, among other things. I'm a little disappointed about that, but better to take it a bit easy than to injure myself and not be able to run at all for weeks or even months.

Christmas is in two days, and I'll be at work. I don't mind working Christmas for now, or any of the statutory holidays, to be honest. I don't have kids yet, so I'm fine with the idea of working Christmas so other young families can be together during the holidays. I've done that for ten years now, and I probably won't stop until I have children of my own. I can only hope that someone in my office will choose to repay the favour when that happens, but of course, they're not obligated to. I just remember my cousin having to spend Christmas without my aunt (she was a nurse) when we were growing up, and I remember how much it sucked.

Anyway, it's been a whirlwind of Christmas prep around here. I've sent out holiday cards to everyone I know who wanted and asked for one (if you missed my post on here and on LJ and on Twitter, ping me and I'll add you to the list for next year), totalling fifty-seven cards (egads). Two weeks ago I baked cookies with [livejournal.com profile] ai731, which as usual have been a big hit with everyone at the office and at Meeting. I've been lighting the candles on my Advent wreath for the first time in a long time, and I must say I've missed the comfort of that particular ritual. It's as much a part of my Christmas now as singing carols with the Quakers, so I'm glad I was able to start up that tradition again. It's the only tradition I came up with specifically for myself: my parents never lit candles, nor did my ex (who I'm pretty sure no longer identified as Christian, although the secular part of Christmas was a big deal for her and for Bean too), nor does anyone else I know. I just remember the wreath candles being lit at school when I was a child, and to me it doesn't feel like Christmas without it.

I'm hosting an "un-Christmas" lunch again this year, as I'm working through Christmas. My parents are coming up on the 29th, and on the 30th I'm having them and [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave and his wife for lunch. I have what I hope is a fun menu planned: a beet salad as an entrée, followed by lemon tarragon Cornish game hens, wild rice, and mashed sweet potatoes. Yesterday I baked and froze a tourtière as the final side dish. That's the last time I ever follow a baking "tip," incidentally. Several recipes suggested I wrap foil around the edges of my pie crust so they wouldn't burn, and they *stuck* to the foil and ripped apart my lovely pie. :( It should still taste fine, at least, but I'm disappointed in how it turned out. Today, if there's time, I'm going to bake and freeze an apple pie for dessert. There should be time, if I do it right.

I've been doing some tidying and cleaning of spaces in the house I hadn't touched in a while. The front closet got a makeover yesterday morning, and my CDs got sort of organised. Or at least they're not in a massive pile anymore where they didn't fit into my CD case. I need to get a second CD case to hold them all, frankly. I still need to actually tidy, vacuum, and mop the main areas of the house. I've been procrastinating on that, in part because I've been sleeping poorly of late and the idea of doing those "big" jobs feels exhausting. Eventually I'll get over my reticence and do it, probably on Monday, between my day and night shifts. I even put my curtains in the wash, though I haven't ironed them yet. I should put them back up before my night shifts start, at least, so I can be sure to get enough sleep next week. It's hard to tell what consists of me being truly productive, and what's actually a sort of constructive procrastination. Still, at least things are getting done, and with any luck and a bit of hard work everything that needs to be finished will be by the time Thursday rolls around. Then maybe I'll sleep for the next year. ;)

We've been getting a lot of snow this year, which is pleasing to me, in spite of the shovelling. Last year we had a green Christmas, and it almost broke my heart. So I'm happy enough to have to shovel, if it means having a white Christmas.

It's Christmastime, and that means the stores are stocking eggnog again. This makes me a happy camper. I love eggnog. I love Christmas, actually. Every aspect of Christmas, except maybe the rampant commercialism. Even that I can mostly tune out. I like seeing all the pretty lights come out, and I enjoy the cheesy Christmas carols playing tinnily over loudspeakers in the street.

I love the cold air, I love the snow. I love putting up Christmas trees and decorations and lights, and watching little children get excited about Santa Claus. I like trying to figure out what kind of presents to give to my parents and to the few members of my family to whom I give presents every year. Even if my brain chemistry hates this time of year, I really like it.

Did I mention I really love Christmas? :)

Did I mention I have eggnog?

I am a very, very happy camper right now, although I am quite tired.

I figure I ought to know by the end of the week if [livejournal.com profile] miseri has managed to infect me with his chicken pox. I rather hope not, as it would put a serious damper on my Christmas and work plans.

I remember when weekends lasted longer than two days.

You think I'm joking, but I'm not. Weekends when I was a kid started at 3pm on Friday afternoon and last until 8am on Monday mornings.

Weekends go by a lot faster than they used to. Of course, so do weekdays, but there are more of those, so it doesn't show as much. Case in point: this weekend. It went by in the blink of an eye, and I didn't get as much done as I thought I would.

Friday night was the first time I went dancing in nearly two weeks, and my body made me pay for it for two days straight. It was well worth it, mind you. I never feel quite so good as when I'm dancing. The only thing that would make dancing better for me would be to have a regular dancing partner. I want to be able to two-step as much as I want, but no one wants to dance with me. I'm constantly stuck having to restrict myself only to the line-dances that mean I can dance by myself (while surrounded by other people, it's true).

If I had to give up everything else I'm doing right now, dancing would be the one activity I'd keep.

Saturday was band practice. We ran through the set list, which went pretty well given the amount of time that's elapsed since we all rehearsed together. We worked on the first of our new songs, and even though I'll be beating my head against the percussion for a long time to come, we can already see where it's going to go. It's pretty exciting.

Working with Random Colour is a vastly satisfying experience. We all have similar temperaments and similar working methods, and so we get a lot done very quickly. Efficiency is our motto. (That and "We need to cut that intro," and possibly "Let's speed this song up!") We had a small band meeting during our break, and we dealt with a number of outstanding issues quickly and efficiently, and painlessly which is most important of all. Consumate professionals and all that. :D

Saturday afternoon found me going to IKEA, as previously mentioned in an earlier post, as well as Christmas-tree shopping for [livejournal.com profile] ai731, who blitzed the Canadian Tire so fast she practically left scorch marks in the parking lot. I was amused.

And, of course, there was the famous soup party at [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti's that evening. The corn chowder was by far my favourite, but all the soups were marvellous. We got to meet the science teacher we'd heard so much about, and thus the evening was spent with good food and good company and good conversation.

In other words: bliss.

Sunday was originally meant to be the first session of the long-neglected Mage game with [livejournal.com profile] meallanmouse and [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave, but was cancelled due to plague. Instead I slept in until 1400 hours, only to be awakened by a phone call from [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti who told me I had left behind a knitting needle.

I toddled off to retrieve it and ended up staying for dinner. We made rice krispie squares (that's a LOT of marshmallows), and there was a repeat (at my request) of the corn chowder along with the rice and meat and other goodness. I suspect that the Venditti's are beginning to think that I live there. ;)

So, yes. Sunday was quiet, which is a good thing. Sleeping in is highly underrated.

Thus begins another week. I really need to win the lottery. Some day I shall have all the time I want to do the things I love, rather than chase after paycheques all week long. :P

The weekend went by in a blur. I'm not sure how that happened. Wasn't it January yesterday? I keep saying that, but it's true.

Friday was the NaNo wrap party, which was loads of fun even though I was drugged and in pain and not altogether coherent. I did read an excerpt of my novel, though. I was blown away by the quality of some of the writing. Well, at least, the ones I'd never heard before. I'd already read the work of several people there, so I knew that their writing skills were awesometastic.

Staggered home in a cab with [livejournal.com profile] baronscartop and [livejournal.com profile] ai731, and ended up passing out around midnight or 1am, I don't remember.

Was up at 8:00 the next morning, packed my stuff and tried my best to hustle my way out the door in order to go to Alexandria to visit [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave, the Wuh-Mun (who still has no LJ despite our best efforts), [livejournal.com profile] looking4wings and [livejournal.com profile] wultabat. [livejournal.com profile] looking4wings wasn't feeling 100% in the morning, so she took a nap while [livejournal.com profile] wultabat hoovered. I assisted in the cutting and peeling of carrots and potatoes, while we were subjected to the entirety of "A Tony Bennett Christmas." Some Christmas carols are not meant to be crooned, that's all I have to say about that.

Once that was done I went back to my knitting. The Supar Seekrit Projekt continues apace, and at the rate I'm going I think I may well have time for the Other Supar Seekrit Projekt I was hoping to get done. For a while I thought it might have to wait until after Christmas, which would be too bad. I shall not say more in this public forum, lest little pitchers turn out to have big eyes as well as big ears.

After a quiet lunch of carrot soup (oh, God, the carrot soup! ahem...) and yummy soft white bread, the Hordes descended upon in the form of [livejournal.com profile] looking4wings's sister, her sister's boyfriend S., and her sister's three children, aged something like 5 to 12 or so. Very nice kids, well-behaved and well-mannered, even though the youngest was a little hyper and climbed all over the place. Overall I was very impressed with them.

We (that is I, [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave, [livejournal.com profile] wultabat, S., and the eldest of the three kids) set out into the woods not long after to bag ourselves some Christmas trees. [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave pointed out one which looked suitable for me, and so I chopped it down without further ado. I then struck a triumphant pose, because it seemed like the thing to do at the time.

We staggered home triumphantly with our trophies, and [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave continued my ongoing corruption by introducing me to something he has decided to callGlögg. He put in a lot more rum and brandy than the recipe called for, and thus he and I got very, very sloshed. Not so sloshed that we were incoherent and sick, but definitely enough to make walking a challenge and to make everything seem a lot funnier. Mulled wine is very, very nice.

[livejournal.com profile] looking4wings made a positively scrumptious dinner, from which we emerged slightly on the wrong side of stuffed. You gotta love the holidays.

[livejournal.com profile] fearsclve and I eventually made our way back to the Fearsranch across the road, where I decided to stay the night. The Glögg did nothing to improve my driving skills, after all. Despite my virtuous intentions of going to bed at a halfway decent hour, I ended up playing this very addictive game called Bejewelled on his computer until a completely ungodly hour of the morning. It's like crack on a computer screen, and it just keeps going and going and going... I also briefly checked my email and LJ, just because I had access to a computer and teh intarnet. Whee!

We woke up later than we intended the next morning, since we were scheduled to go to breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] looking4wings and [livejournal.com profile] wultabat, but we managed to make it only about fifteen or twenty minutes late. I caught up quickly with the Wuh-Mun, but not nearly enough, so it's a good thing I'll be seeing her again next Sunday.

Bombed back to Montreal in the car (gas is so much cheaper in Ontario! It's not fair!), and headed directly to see [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti. Did not pass Go, did not collect $200. We vegged out for most of the day, watching movies. We saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which was positively uninspired. I haven't seen such poor onscreen chemistry since the remake of The Thomas Crowne Affair. We moved on to Madagascar, which was cute but not as funny as I thought it might be. It had some very good moments, mind you, and I suspect a lot of kids who watch that may end up becoming vegetarians. :P

We made a quick stop-off at the store, where I bought some cheap Christmas baubles for my new tree, and made another detour by the grocery store for a few more essentials which are too boring to list here.

Trooped back to [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti's just in time for dinner, which was also delicious (it always is), caught a few minutes of A Muppet Christmas Carol, and then ended up watching a Bill Murray movie called Scrooged, which was also very cute but not especially impressive (sorry [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti!). I knitted and we chatted, and altogether had a great time.

And, all too soon, I had to go home and haul my Christmas tree up the stairs (thank goodness it wasn't very heavy!). I put it in the stand that [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave generously lent to me, but when I got up this morning the tree had fallen over(whether it was all gravity or the cats helped, I'm not sure), so I suspect I shall have to do some bracing/tying of the tree when I get home today. Decorating shall happen Wednesday, when I have time.

That's all, folks! One day I shall not be in a position wherein I have to make monster updates to keep everyone up to speed. :)
