I'm starting a re-watch of Babylon 5 with some online friends. We'll be watching one episode a week and chatting about it afterward. I've never done an organized re-watch, so it'll be interesting to see how this turns out. Given the political nature of Babylon 5, it feels like a timely re-watch. A nice reminder of allegories about resisting illegitimate governments that rule through fear, xenophobia, and martial law.

Otherwise, the political world continues to be a trash fire. DeVos is seconds away from becoming Secretary of Education, Steve Bannon appears to be running at least half of Donald Trump's political shitshow, and thousands of refugees to the US now find their lives in danger due to the Muslim Ban. The only heartening news is that the Canadian government is having an emergency debate tonight concerning the refugee crisis, and while I have my doubts that the current government will do anything concrete, lest we antagonize our very powerful economic allies to the south, but the fact that it's being discussed at all is something, I guess. Hey, my government could prove me wrong and decide to rescind the safe third country agreement, welcoming refugees turned away from the USA. Who knows? It could happen.

In personal news, my landlady has stepped up the crazy. The cleaning service reported back to her (she says) that the cat litter smells (I don't smell it, but maybe I've gone nose blind to it?) and that I've damaged the floors, which is complete and utter bullshit. Anyway, she's gone from "You're the best tenant I ever had!" last week back to implying that I'll be evicted, yet again. She's giving me whiplash. Anyway, she's coming tomorrow afternoon with a flooring company? I think? She's left me so many contradictory messages that I don't know which one of them she thinks is the truth anymore.

Ugh.

My recycling box is gone. Woe! Another thing I have to put on my to-do list. Poor recycling box, sacrificed to the gods of snow removal. It figures that something like this would happen just as I'm trying to be more environmentally responsible.

Had to get up stupidly early to move the car yesterday, only to have them *not* remove the snow. Got up stupidly early today for the same reason, but they appear to be following through on the snow removal thing now, which makes me feel better. I know they're overworked, but that doesn't make me any less tired for it.

At some point, when my energy comes back (hah!) I am going to start researching all my local government-type folk (municipal, provincial and federal) and start writing stern letters about environmentalism, social development, and all that sort of good stuff. I just have to figure out who to write to.

Just got happy election stuff in the mail. I am officially registered to vote in the upcoming provincial election. Too bad none of the candidates is one I feel comfortable voting for. Theoretically there's a green candidate in my riding, but he/she/it hasn't seen fit to even send out leaflets, so I have no idea who they are. Bah. I should go poke them, but I don't know when I'll have time to do that. Gotta make time, I suppose.

I have made cream of wheat this morning, and added apples and cinnamon. I think it ought to taste quite good. *tests* Yep. Excellent. Can't think why this didn't occur to me before.

I've noticed a trend among the more modern sci fi shows to have other humans as the worst kind of enemy. Been watching Battlestar Galactica right on the heels of Babylon 5, and thus can't help but see parallels between Clark and Cain. Part of me is glad that it's not just the aliens that are the bad guys (or the Cylons, who are alien by extension), and another part of me is thinking "Oh God, not again!" I think it's just because the kind of shows I watch tend to pose the larger questions, and so the same motifs return. I doubt very much that most of mainstream American television would make it very clear that torturing prisoners is a bad thing. I'm thinking, in this case, of 24, in which our heroes routinely turn to torture as a means of extracting information because they "don't have time for this."

I don't know where I'm going with that. I was just struck by it.

That's it for now, I think.

It feels a bit strange to be waking up, having a shower and prepping for work at this hour of the day. However, it does mean that the Overtime Fairy is going to pay me a visit. Yay! Got in a four-hour catnap, and watched the last episode of Season 4 of Babylon 5. I am underwhelmed, sadly enough, but then I've never been a fan of shows in which the last episode sums up in about five minutes what happens in the next ten to a hundred years. So.

Now I have to get dressed and head in to work in about 45 minutes. Dinner is in prep mode on the stove, the cats are clinging to me (not surprisingly) and on the whole life is good. Am having some weather and tiredness-related angst, but with any luck that shall resolve itself once I've had some more sleep. I know better by now than to think that all the irrational thoughts floating around in my head are anything but temporary, so I'm doing what I do best: battening down the hatches and weathering out the storm. These things blow over, they always do. I just wish they'd give me a break for a few months. Sheesh.

Off to go check on dinner.

I am not allowed to borrow DVDs anymore. I obviously can't be trusted to show any self-restraint. I finally finished Season 3 of "Babylon 5" (and can I just say "AAAAAUGH!"), and then blazed through ALL of "Slings & Arrows." God, that show is funny, and it made me laugh out loud and cry and not want to stop watching.

*sigh*

Clearly, I can't be a responsible adult around good shows when they're not rationed out in weekly dosages by the television. But it was sooo good. I think I may spring for the DVD after all, and see if I can get my greedy little mitts on the second season. It was awesome.

Now I just have the rest of "Babylon 5" to watch (thank goodness there's too much of each season to watch in one sitting, otherwise I might accidentally end up doing that again), as well as the second season of Deadwood, which I should probably watch next. It'll put me back in a more Deadlands-ish headspace to write BTP too, or so I hope.

Snow Day

It's not really a snow day. However, I didn't do any shoveling when I got home this morning, so it feels like a snow day (there's like two feet of snow out there!). I am looking out for orange no-parking signs to appear on my street. If they don't appear today, I shall hibernate completely until tomorrow. Otherwise, I may have to go out and move the car to somewhere it won't be towed and I won't get a $92 ticket. It also feels like a snow day because I'm home during the afternoon and there's snow outside. I also have tea.

I need some cleaning fairies. The place got messy again without my noticing. Not sure how that happened. Looking at it, I know I can fix it in a relatively short space of time. I'm going to go to bed early tonight (after sleeping from eight to two thirty today, I think I can get away with that) and get up bright and early tomorrow and do a major houseclean. I have to straighten up the kitchen, and put away the Freecycle stuff that the flakes didn't come to pick up after all. I think I'll put them away and put them up again this summer, when people will be more likely to come pick them up. Winter is a bad time all around. I may put them up for grabs on LJ first, so my LJ friends can get first pick, should they so desire.

I shall be spending today quietly, writing long-awaited posts for Bluebook, and I shall perhaps make stew and watch Babylon 5. Today I am taking OFF. I have had a bizarre week, and I deserve the day to myself. So there.

Quandary

A warning for those of you who don't like NaNoWriMo: I'll be discussing it in this post, though on a level which I don't feel belongs in my writing LJ. Feel free to skip this entry as a result of that.

Okay, disclaimer over. I'm in the middle of a very, very serious quandary. I am currently at roughly 83,000 words. I could, theoretically, make it to 85K tonight, and that would put me in a strong position to reach 100K by the end of Thursday. I could then bask in my own awesomeness for quite a while, which is always a nice thing.

On the other hand, I'm tired. A bath sounds really nice right about now, and the last few episodes of Season 1 of Babylon 5 are calling to me.

I've made popcorn. The popcorn will be useful both for writing and for watching B5 (though not for the bath).

*sigh*

Ambition or comfort? You see my problem. Clearly one of those life-and-death situations.

I think I shall continue writing for now. I shall review my options at 8pm, and see if I'm in the middle of a gripping scene which won't leave me alone, or if I'm struggling with the story and the bath sounds even more tempting. One more hour of writing. That's not too bad.

I wonder if it's worth running out to the dep to get myself a fizzy drink with which to have some Amaretto. Or I could make sour mix. As I recall it's two parts water to one part sugar to one part lemon juice. I have all these things.

Hmm.
