Sporadic Life Update #75

So life proceeds apace. Just got back from a mini-roadtrip to New Brunswick with my colleague J, which was equal parts fun and frustration, mostly because she turned out to be a slightly passive-aggressive kind of travelling companion. Overall, though, it was a really good time, and the GSCVO handled the road beautifully AND had fantastic gas mileage.

Work is work. The schedule is still wreaking havoc with what little social life I have, but is otherwise pretty good. I'm not being totally overworked, which is a nice change of pace.

We've had some unpleasantness over the past few months due to the possibility of permanent positions opening up. We are 14 temporary operators vying for six job openings, and while some of us (like myself) are being reasonably zen about the whole process, others have taken it upon themselves to make things as unpleasant as humanly possible. Even though the process of filling the permanent positions is pretty much an objective one (everyone has to pass through two evaluations, one written and one oral, which are graded by one senior staff member and one HR person who's entirely impartial), these people have decided that they will be best served by trying to undermine their colleagues in any way they can think of. It's really very unfortunate, and has made the atmosphere around here pretty tense. I'm lucky enough that my 12-hour schedule keeps me mostly out of the way of said unpleasant people, which is good all-around.

It does, however, motivate me even more to keep working toward my goal of becoming a regular member. I'm not deluding myself that there won't be other problems in other jobs, but at least I'd be paid more. ;)

Lots of other minor work-related things, which I may go into in depth at some future date.

I came home from my trip to a very sick cat. Gretzky's been feeling poorly for a while now, but she took a sharp turn for the worse when I was gone. So we hied ourselves to the vet today, where I found out that my beloved vet is on maternity leave, leaving me to deal with the evil vet who accused me of wanting my cat to suffer back in the day. Evil vet redeemed himself by A) being polite and respectful, B) telling me how beautiful my cat was, and C) not trying to sell me any ridiculously expensive procedures on my cat.

Gretzky got poked and prodded, injected with antibiotics, injected with a whole lot of saline solution to rehydrate her, and even got her claws clipped since she won't let me near her paws anymore and her claws were threatening to grow right into the pads of her feet. The possibly-not-evil vet cleaned her up, talked nicely to her, and let me hold her while he did undignified things to her so she wouldn't be too traumatized.

We got home after two hours, and she's already looking much better, and seems perkier. So all is well in the feline world.

I then got called in for an emergency night shift at work, which is where I am now, sneaking onto the internet. Bad Phnee! ;) I am tired and mostly braindead, so I'm hoping they don't hold it against me too much.

In other news, the date for Capricornucopia has been set: January 15th. Mark your calendars. :)

So, one very expensive vet visit later, we are home.

There was Dramah. Gretzky does NOT like going to the vet, and she does NOT like the thermometer and she very much DOES NOT LIKE needles. She spent half the time with her head buried in my armpit, purring very very loudly, and the other half trying to escape by clawing her way up my arm and over my shoulders.

It appears has the same upper respiratory crap she had last year right around this time. Apparently she has a knack for getting sick in the winter, same as everyone else.

Also, it's time for Round 2 of flea season. Flea treatments are not cheap. Egads.

As an added bonus, she's also managed to get her cornea inflamed with... something. We're not sure what. The vet put some radioactive-looking goop in her eye (it's not really radioactive, more like phosphorescent, but it LOOKED cool and glowed in the dark!) and was able to determine that at least there was no ulcer present on her cornea. So, uh, that's a sort of win. She does have to have eyedrops in three times a day. Joy.

We're doing more bloodwork to make sure her kidneys and thyroid are doing what they're supposed to, since she's lost over a pound in the last year. She's down to nearly 9lbs, poor girl. Let's remember that when I first got her six years ago she weighed nearly 15lbs. So she's technically at a "healthy" weight, but still. Not good.

I had to rescue the vet tech when they tried to take blood. Gretzky decided that being held by a stranger and poked with a needle was Not On™, and yowled and flailed and scratched and writhed and was generally uncooperative until it was decided that they should let me hold her after all. I offered, and they were all "no no, we've got it, we're professionals," until the cat turned into a demon. She was good as gold when I held her. I was amused, though it's probably not nice of me. ;)

And that's that. Follow-up in two weeks' time.

Shit.

I have to take Gretzky to the vet. The poor girl has yet another upper respiratory thing, and it looks like it's affecting at least one of her eyes. I'm pretty sure she's lost a lot of weight recently, too.

My baby's getting old.
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Pan-Pan)
Pan-Pan has, of late, decided that he needs to live inside my ribcage. I keep trying to tell him there isn't enough room in there for both him and my internal organs, but he's hell-bent on testing the theory anyway.

I've turned up the heat a bit in the apartment in the vain hopes that it's only because he's feeling chilly that he keeps trying to burrow in under my spleen.

Ow.

Right now I've managed to persuade him to cuddle up with George on top of my feet. I now have no feeling at all in my toes, but it's better than the alternative.

Okay, the title is a lie, but it's been a while since I updated with anything other than whining about the fact that my head hurt. So!

Life has been proceeding apace. While it seems it's a hard winter for everyone (media sources say 70% less sun than the national average this year! GAH!), the St. John's Wort is helping me get up and get out the door every day, and that's a Very Good Thing™.

The rest of my life is being taken up by work and going to the gym, occasionally seeing people (veeeery occasionally, alas), and generally keeping out of trouble.

Supernatural started up again on Thursday with a new episode, and there was much squeeing and bouncing until about the halfway mark of the episode, when it kind of turned a little "meh." Still, it was a pretty decent episode, just not earth-shattering and annoyingly didn't resolve anything at all (I was sort of hoping for progress on a meta level. Oh well. Maybe next time.)

Basically, I've come to the conclusion that I need to just roll with the whole low-energy thing this winter. If that's how it is, that's how it is. I am going to stop feeling as though I'm letting down the universe just because I'm not a whirlwind of sociability. Seriously, Phnee, the universe will survive just fine without you there to prop it up. :P

So I'm doing the bare minimum to keep functioning and keep myself in a good headspace. I get plenty of sleep, see friends when I can (all alone time and no friends makes Phnee go crazy!), and go to the gym. The gym is a two-fold blessing: 1) regular exercise helps keep me on an even keel, and 2) I am doing SUPER well. I can totally bench press 100lbs now, and I am SO PROUD!

The cats have been like VELCRO lately. I've had a bit of extra time off from work (long story, don't ask, and I'm totally paying for it in February), and when I'm home they glom onto me like alien face huggers. Especially Pan-Pan, who has been doing his level best to actually graft himself to my person. It's been a painful if very loving experience.

Yeah, that's about it. I've been reading e.e. cummings and fanfic, and am contemplating picking up the latest Harry Dresden novel sooner rather than later. It ought to be in paperback by now, if memory serves. Part of me is considering picking up a big juicy classic in February, too, if only for a change of pace away from genre fiction.

So, how's everyone been?
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Blustery)
It's snowing out. Again.

I have been sitting on my sofa all day with George curled up next to me. Every so often he rolls over and demands that I rub his belly.

I'm re-watching "Supernatural," because I am just that obsessed. It's still making me giggle and cringe and worry about the characters. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of shows that have been able to do that for me a second time around ("The Pretender" is one of them, for the record).

In short: snowy day, purring cats, good TV.

Yeah, life is rough.

S.A.D. stuff behind the cut. The short version is: Phnee is taking St. John's Wort and things are better. )

So, yeah. Doing better. It's not exactly unicorns pissing rainbows and butterflies, but it's better.

Maybe later on I'll get around to posting the usual memes I do around this time of year, start making plans, which is what I always do around my birthday.

Good times.

Happy trails, all!
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (George (curious))
George has developed a new complex/neurosis in which he likes having me around to eat. I don't have to be there the whole time, but I do have to go with him to the kitchen before he'll settle in front of his dish.

I am reminded of [livejournal.com profile] toughlovemuse walking her Jake to his dish, and somehow the whole process makes me both amused and sad.

George may be a pampered princess, but I think that, in the end, I would regret not taking the time to walk him to his dish. It seems like such a small concession.

Of course, right now I'm feeling less sentimental about the whole process because he just puked at my feet.

Ah, love. :P
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Blustery)
Spent the morning with [livejournal.com profile] karine, [livejournal.com profile] owldaughter, [livejournal.com profile] ai731 and [livejournal.com profile] toughlovemuse doing the knitting thing, had a delicious lunch of soup, freshly-baked rolls, and schadenfreude pie.

Have been vegging at home, watching the new season of Heroes, getting some writing done, having quality time with the cats. Good times, overall.

The weather is kind of grey, which I suppose is normal for November. Sleeping cats, however, totally makes up for that.
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Pan-Pan)
So I'm sitting on the sofa, and Pan-Pan has taken up his favourite position on the back of the sofa behind my head. The next thing I know, in an attempt to shift positions Pan-Pan has rolled off the sofa and landed with a huge thump! on the floor and is now looking up at me with an offended expression.

*snerk*

At this rate, the whole household will have bruises.

I am watching the fourth season of Supernatural that arrived via Amazon today (yes, I caved and bought the DVDs). The fourth season is turning out pretty damned good, I must say. Better than I'd hoped for, which is nice.

So now I'm lying on the sofa with a fuzzy blanket and Gretzky and Pan-Pan lying on my legs. Smudge is on the back of the sofa, and George is on the prowl —alternately yowling at the window and coming over to demand cuddles.

Domestic bliss.

Unfortunately, Pan-Pan and Gretzky together weigh about 35lbs, which is totally cutting off the circulation to my legs.

George wishes it to be known that he is The Saddest Cat In The Universe™.

Just so you're aware.

Life with me is a pit of suffering, despair, and angst. He's been HOWLING all morning.

Cats.

It is WEIRD not to be at work today. New schedule has started, so I only work on Wednesday this week. A two-day week, imagine. The mind boggles.

Novelling has been a hell of a slog today. So far I'm clocking in just shy of 3,000 words. Maybe I'll be able to make it to 5K by the end of the day, but maybe not. Oh well. I refuse to angst about it. I have to get over this little hangup I have about producing the same wordcount per day as I did in 2006. I think that was a one-time fluke. NaNo is a marathon, not a sprint.

Otherwise today has been spent sitting quietly with the cats. They are all sleeping, doubtless plotting nefarious evilness telepathically. No good can come of this.

I am surrounded by sleeping cats. It's nice. :)

...is that they make one veeeeery reluctant to get anything done. Really, I could sit here all day with Smudge in my lap, purring, and do nothing else at all.

Also, reading Naomi Novik's novels in quick succession results in very vivid dreams about dragons.

Okay. Gotta go set up beds.

Stupid cat. He vanished into the ether just as I was about to leave for work, and I had to lock him out of the house.

I hope he spends the evening hanging out in the garden and stays put until I get back.

I am going to be a basket case all evening.

*sigh*

Thunderstorms and hail! Just what I needed for a day's worth of running errands. Eesh.

Got a new microwave on sale. Yay! Put the other one out with a "Free (needs repair)" sign, so caveat emptor and all that. Replaced the defective water fountain, but haven't tried to put it together yet.

Am off to bring dry cleaning and to visit IKEA for storage stuff. Am being mauled by Pan-Pan, who has decided there is not enough love in his life. Clearly I neglect him cruelly and never give him pats or love.

Picked up a gallon of paint for the bedroom, too. Not too shabby for an afternoon's work.

There's a little black-and-white cat who's been coming by regularly in search of a boyfriend. In fact, she has been desperately in search of some boy cat love for some time now.

Sadly for her, she has come meeping and murpling to the wrong door. There ain't nobody here who can help her out, let me assure you. All my boys have been fixed for years, and can only look at her in mild confusion as she makes an indecent spectacle of herself.

I have nicknamed her Little Miss Blue, or Miss Blue as the fancy strikes me, because she's got a weird blue spot in her eye. It's either a cataract or a blind spot of some kind. She's very, very friendly, not at all shy of humans, and does not appear to be starving, which makes me think she must belong to someone and not be a street cat. Or, if she is a street cat, she hasn't been one for long.

She and George have a weird unconsummated love affair going on. He's not quite sure how to give her what she wants, but by golly he'll give it his best shot! She hangs around the front and back windows, peeping and mrrowing hopefully, and he goes bonkers every time. Yet even if my cats are outside at the same time as she is, the worst they get up to is hanging out in the same sunbeam. Yes, life on the wild side, folks.

Today I saw her out front (she usually comes to the back door) and went outside to see what she wanted. I then got treated to the sight of her trying to leap gracefully from the ground to my window (about five feet off the ground from where she sat) where George was sitting, snag the windowsill with her claws, scrabble frantically for purchase before falling back, flailing ungracefully. She twisted in mid-air and landed on all fours, of course, then gave me a look of injured dignity and skulked off through the wrought-iron fence, no doubt off to give her tail a proper washing in order to regain her composure.

I don't know why I like her so much. I think it's because she's got moxy.

I am amusing myself by poking George awake every ten minutes or so. He is a grumpy cat now.

Hah.

:::06:00 this morning:::

Me: *sleeps*

George: "MUMMY! GOOD MORNING! I LOVE YOU LOTS!" *leaps onto my spleen*

Me: *oof!* "George, get off!" *turns over and goes back to sleep*

George: "MUMMY! IT'S MORNING! YOU SHOULD PAT ME!" *headbutts me*

Me: *grumble* "Go 'way."

George: "I LOVE YOU, MUMMY! WAKE UP!" *headbutts me in the face*

Me: "Go 'way."

George: "I LOVE YOU LOTS AND LOTS! LET ME SHOW YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU!" *sticks his wet nose in my ear*

Me: "For the love of..." *tosses cat onto the floor*

George: "MUMMY! YOU'RE NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO MEEEEEE!" *leaps up onto night table and rubs against lamp*

Me: *knocks cat onto floor*

George: *jumps back onto bed* "MUUUUUMMMMMYYYYYY! I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU GET UP! GET UP GET UP GET UP!" *headbutts me in the face*

Me: *knocks cat onto floor*

George: *jumps back onto bed* "MUMMY! YOU'RE NO FUN AT ALL! GET UUUUUUUP!" *licks indiscriminately at my face*

Me: "FINE! God, I'm up. I'm UP! Get off me!" *gets up*

George: "YAAAAAAAAAAAY!"

Me: *gets up*

George: *curls up on sofa upstairs and goes to sleep*
