I just realised that I've missed out on a segment of the musical sector, namely "goth" music (I don't know what it's really called, sorry), and I actually need this kind of info for something I want to write.
So, goth-types, (and goth-friendly types who know what they're doing), care to help a clueless girl out? Can you give me names of bands/artists/what have you?
Oh, and here's something specific for the Montreal people: which bars and clubs are considered "goth" these days? Which ones are filled with angsty sixteen-year-old pseudo-goths, and which ones are actually goth clubs?
Be as basic as you can: you're talking to a girl who's been to a club maybe four times in her entire life. :)
Thanks! :)

Goth?
There's a whole list of music in the original softcover "Vampire Storyteller's Guide". Not all of it is necessarily 'goth', but I'm sure you can get a few good songs out of it. "Bloodletting" is among those listed.
For clubs... I don't know. Sphinx (beside the Peel metro) used to be kind of goth, but I don't know whether it still is -- or even if it's still in business. Was Foufounes ever considered goth? I remember hearing that the White Wolf guys loved it when they came to visit Montreal, but maybe that isn't true. And in Toronto there's Savage Garden -- I went there once. 8^0
I get the impression that goth is sort of out nowadays, though.

Death in June
Swans
All My Faith Lost

We have thousands and thousands of goth songs. If you'd like a compilation for review.
PS: The Cure is my favorite band....I don't think you knew that...but they are...

Beborn Beton (more EBM than goth, but most goth clubs play mostly EBM these days anyway)
Wolfsheim
Covenant
Faith and the Muse
Mira
Lacuna Coil (more metal-ish)
The Gathering
as for clubs in the area: Sphinx used to be the main one, but it's closed now. Sapphir on St-Laurent is goth (only upstairs though; the downstairs is usually hip-hop ~ you think that'd clash, but really it doesn't... *g*). Parking on Amherst does its Overdose night on Thursday nights (kinda but not really goth). every month or two, Belafre (little bar/club) does an 80s night that is frequented almost entirely by goths. and, my personal favorite, Passeport on St-Denis has a Wednesday night goth night (which ranges from terrible to great).
betcha didn't know i was into this stuff, hunh? we goth-friendly types tend to crop up unexpectedly... if you ever wanna actually visit any of these places, myself, ford (http://www.livejournal.com/users/fordcov), belfana (http://www.livejournal.com/users/belfana), and several others are usually out and about at one or another of them...
now of course, i'm curious. why the need for info?

Date: 2003-07-06 02:12 pm (UTC)I'm writing a short story, and my main character (independently from me, I might add) decided she wanted to be goth.
Now I don't know what to do with her because I tend to work with a soundtrack in my head, and I have no clue what goth music is like. :)
